Antoni Bassas' analysis: 'Hitting rock bottom in Badalona'
What's happening in Badalona is destroying us as a society. It's outrageous because of the lack of even the most basic solidarity, but above all, it's incredibly short-sighted. Those who protest will, sooner or later, turn against them, because one day all those who spread hate speech will come to take away what little we have left.
When things are done wrong, you can't expect them to turn out right. Tonight, In Badalona, two groups of neighbors clashed at a distance, one group against the evicted immigrants and the other in favor. The audio in this video explains everything:
If Mayor Albiol was stirring things up, if the Generalitat simply complied with the court orders for eviction by sending the Mossos d'Esquadra, and the State government is not involved, the result is that instead of ending one problem, we are creating two: one between neighbors and the other for the people who have to sleep under the bridge.
Albiol doesn't want competition from the far right and has seen in the B9 crisis an opportunity to remind the residents that nobody can beat him in toughness against immigrants and that he likes to use words like "scum".
And we haven't heard the President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, say that it's wrong to prevent people who have to sleep rough from receiving help, that it's wrong from a basic standpoint of humanity. This is regarding leadership on the ground. But if we talk about management, we compare the deployment of resources by the Generalitat in Badalona with what's organized when there's a fire or a flood. The PSC has spoken of actions taken with "discretion." Well, you see, the problem has only gotten bigger, and as we say in today's editorial, in Albiol, but also in the Generalitat, this crisis has spiraled out of control.
What's happening in Badalona is destroying us as a society. It's outrageous because of the lack of even the most basic solidarity, but above all, it's incredibly short-sighted to think that those who protest will, sooner or later, turn against them, because one day all those who spout hate speech will come to take away what little we have. This isn't just rhetoric. Remember the new American foreign policy: the United States will support far-right parties in Europe. And these parties are coming for us, for anything that isn't in their interests.
To conclude, I ask you to revisit a photograph we saw earlier:
Taken yesterday by photographer Pau de la Calle. A bonfire at night, especially cold these days. Sometimes it's not necessary to set up papier-mâché nativity scenes. Reality has provided us with one in Badalona.
Good morning.
