The weather for Saint George's Day

Will it rain on Sant Jordi's Day? Find out if you'll need to grab an umbrella or sunglasses

Afternoon showers and heat are marking the weather of the days leading up to the diada

20/04/2026

BarcelonaWe are now at the gates of the Diada de Sant Jordi, the most anticipated and massive cultural event of the year in Catalonia, which causes the streets to be overflowing throughout the country to see the rose and book stalls. An event full of identity and emotions that no one wants to miss. Therefore, the weather forecast takes on special relevance, to know if we can enjoy the outdoors on this day without rain spoiling it. Will it rain this Sant Jordi? Will we have to grab an umbrella or sunglasses?

It is worth saying that we are in spring, a season marked by variability in the sky. In fact, these previous days we have been having afternoon showers and thunderstorms in some regions, a typically spring situation of instability. Last year the weather respected the diada, but everyone still remembers Sant Jordi 2022, when a series of severe thunderstorms and hailstorms caused havoc in many towns, and even caused material damage to numerous stalls and books. Or in 2024, when we experienced one of the coldest Sant Jordi diadas on record, nothing like the atypical heat we have been having this April.

Will any of these scenarios be repeated this year? The maps are optimistic and indicate that, overall, we will be able to enjoy this beautiful day without much damage, even though the instability will not disappear completely. We try to break down what the different weather models say.

Quite usable weather

With the current maps, it seems that this Sant Jordi will not rain in the vast majority of regions and we will be mostly under the effects of high pressures, but there will be some exceptions. Some afternoon showers or storms will be repeated in the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees. Therefore, from noon onwards, rain may cause problems in these areas, without ruling out some local hail. They will be irregular and short-lived phenomena.

Some meteorological models indicate that during the early hours of the morning there may be low clouds and, even, some scattered drops accompanied by mud, mainly in the regions of Barcelona, Girona and Tarragona. A situation that is still unclear, but which would not continue for the rest of the day, with a lot of sun in general and haze due to the presence of dust in suspension. In short, it will be a profitable day in a large part of the country.

Temporary drop in temperatures

This week we are under the effects of a warm air mass coming from North Africa. The counter-clockwise rotation of a low-pressure system located west of the Peninsula is responsible for driving these southern winds towards our home, with an environment that is too warm for the season.

However, precisely for Sant Jordi, thermometers will take a step back and the mercury will not rise so much at midday, with more moderate heat. Furthermore, the cooler wind from the northeast to the east will strengthen on the coast, which will help to deflate the thermometers.

Therefore, 30 ºC will no longer be reached, with most highs between 22 ºC and 27 ºC, even lower in mountainous areas and by the sea. Therefore, the atypical late spring weather we have been having these past few days will subside for Sant Jordi, which will help to not feel so hot while strolling through the streets.
