Unprofitable weekend, but with nuances and moderate heat
Temperatures will start to rise again and in the afternoon, showers will escape in some areas only
BarcelonaThe cooling has been strong this Friday after the active front that crossed Catalan territory on Thursday. We woke up to a lot of coolness everywhere, and at midday the atmosphere was very pleasant, with the heat in check and many highs between 20 and 25º C, or a little higher in parts of Ponent, the Ebre, and Central Catalonia. All this after the batch of showers and strong storms that swept through a large part of the country between Thursday and Friday morning, with downpours and very significant local accumulations (you will find the most outstanding data and images of this episode at the end of this news). A first weekend of June begins that will be quite profitable, but some afternoon showers will still fall in some areas, especially on Saturday. Temperatures will be rising, with a warmer atmosphere at midday. But the heat will remain moderate, with good sleeping nights.
Saturday: temperatures rise
The early morning and first hours of Saturday will be cool everywhere, including the coast. At dawn, a sweater or jacket will be needed, depending on the area. Maximum temperatures will rise and the atmosphere will be warmer than Friday at midday. However, the heat will remain moderate. Many maximums will be between 25 and 30 ºC, and will be lower in coastal stretches and mountainous areas, while in Ponent and the Ebro valley this mark can already be exceeded.
All in all, quite calm, but with nuances. Some bands of clouds will cross the sky and at times will leave the sun hazy. In addition, there will be low clouds and morning fogs that may persist for several hours in the south. In the afternoon, cloud buildups will grow in mountainous areas of the north of the country, leaving some scattered showers, locally with thunderstorms. They will affect points in the Pyrenees, the eastern Pre-Pyrenees, the northeast interior, and perhaps the pre-coastal areas, in a very irregular manner.
Sunday: very calm
The weather will be very pleasant on Sunday, with sun in general and only a few thin or low clouds in the morning. Afternoon cloudiness in the Pyrenees will be more harmless, and could only leave some isolated and unimportant showers in this sector. Minimum temperatures will rise, and maximum temperatures will be similar or slightly higher. Moderately fresh at first, and warm without extremes in the middle of the day, with many values from 26 to 31 ºC.
Next week will be hotter, but temperatures will have ups and downs. Monday will be a very warm day, and between Tuesday and Wednesday the mercury will deflate again. By the end of the week the atmosphere could be more summery again, with values above average. No new significant rainfall episode is in sight.
Balance of the strong storms
The front of showers and strong storms affected a large part of Catalonia between Thursday and Friday morning. Except for some points in Ponent and Ebre – which remained more on the margins of this episode – it rained almost everywhere. In some cases, real downpours occurred that discharged a large quantity of water in a short time.
In many municipalities, between 15 and 40 l/m² accumulated, especially in the center and north of the country, but in some cases these figures were far exceeded. The main event affected the regions of Ripollès, Lluçanès, Berguedà, and northern Osona, where locally over 100 l/m² were exceeded, with various incidents, floods, and sudden rises of rivers and streams, such as the Ter or the Llobregat. Notable are the 90 l/m² that fell on Thursday in Sant Joan de les Abadesses (Ripollès) and Montesquiu (Osona), as in these municipalities it had not rained so much in a single day since August 2020.
