The weather

The extreme heat eases a bit: 40 ºC will no longer be reached

The atmosphere will still be much warmer than it should be for this time of year

The heat has been the protagonist this Saint John's Eve, one of the warmest since records began. The temperature again exceeded 40°C in Ponent yesterday for the umpteenth consecutive day, although it is already far from the 42 or 43°C recorded on Monday and Tuesday, when we experienced the peak of the heatwave. The temperature will begin to drop progressively from today, although in no case will we notice a significant cooling and we will remain with values above the climatic average. Of course: 40°C will no longer be reached anywhere for the first time this week, and the heatwave is officially declared over. The maps indicate that a more substantial cooling could arrive next week.

They also suffer the effects of this heatwave in European countries such as France, the United Kingdom or Belgium, which in some cases are registering the highest temperatures since records began, both in the month of June and in the year as a whole. Furthermore, these are countries less accustomed – and less prepared – for these heat extremes, a fact that exacerbates their effects on daily life and people's health.

Thursday: sun and less extreme heat

The weather will remain stable and calm, with typical conditions of a long anticyclonic period like the one we are experiencing and still with the presence of suspended dust, which will cloud the sky. The temperature will drop slightly, both day and night, although intense heat will persist everywhere. The maximums will again exceed 36 or 37°C in Ponent and the Ebro interior, far from the values of previous days, and will exceed 30 or 32°C in the rest of the country. In any case, 40°C will no longer be reached anywhere after five days of doing so. The novelty will be that during the afternoon the sun will also predominate, without showers in the Pyrenean regions, although towards the evening some bands of clouds will arrive in the western half.

Few changes in sight

The maps indicate that the temperature will continue its slow descent in the coming days, although the heat typical of July or August will persist. In fact, by the weekend the mercury will reach values similar to those of this Wednesday. The dominance of the sun will also be maintained, with few conditions of instability to generate showers. Only a few showers will escape in the Pyrenees. We will have to wait until the middle of next week to experience a more significant cooling and breathe definitively better, both day and night.
