Rain truce and brief rebound of the heat to say goodbye to September

BarcelonaYesterday's episode of storms and downpours mainly affected a large part of the coast and pre-coast, but especially the Barcelona area and points of the Girona coast. In many cases, the intensity was torrential, which caused sudden rises in rivers and streams and numerous floods. It rained the most in Alt Penedès, Garraf, Anoia, Baix Llobregat, Vallès Occidental, Barcelonès, Baix Empordà, and Gironès, with many records of 50 to 100 l/m² or locally more, many of which fell in just over an hour (you will find the most important data from the storm at the end of this information).

Instead, today the rain will give a break and there will only be some very local and anecdotal showers, with variable skies. What we will notice will be a clear rise in the thermometers after Tuesday's drop, with a transitory rebound in heat to say goodbye to the month of September. But starting Thursday, instability will increase again and temperatures will drop again.

Wednesday: more calm and heat

The weather will be much calmer this Wednesday, the last day of the month, as in general no rain is expected. However, the sky will be variable due to the presence of quite a few intervals of clouds, and it will even be overcast in the western regions during the morning, where some local light rain may occur. On the other hand, towards the northeast there will be many more clearings. In the afternoon, some local and minor showers will occur in parts of the Pyrenees, the Pre-Pyrenees, the pre-coastal area of Tarragona, the Ports, and nearby areas. Not much, and in the vast majority of the territory it will not rain.

All this with temperatures that will be similar early in the morning, with an atmosphere between cool and mild in general and new slightly tropical minimums in coastal sections. As for the maximums, they will clearly rise after Tuesday's drop, with an increase that will be especially marked in points of the interior and the northeast. Many values of 26 ºC to 31 ºC are expected. A brief summer that will be transitory.

More downpours in the coming days

The meteorological situation will become complicated again in the coming days, as the instability will remain pronounced. Thursday and Friday, irregular downpours will repeat in spots, especially in the Pyrenees, the interior, and the south, as well as in the Valencian Community. Locally they will be intense and may be accompanied by storms.

Some meteorological models indicate that over the weekend a more extensive round of rain could arrive, but this extreme is still very uncertain. Temperatures will drop again and, little by little, will normalize for the season, especially starting from the weekend. It seems that, now yes, autumn will end up imposing itself completely over summer.

Flash flood assessment

Tuesday's torrential rains mainly affected the coast and pre-coast of Barcelona and Girona, with many records of 50 to 100 l/m², locally more. Water that fell torrentially in just between one and three hours, which caused flooding and many problems. For example, at the Torroella de Montgrí weather station (Baix Empordà), more than 100 l/m² fell in just over an hour, or 54 in half an hour. Too much water in such a short time. In the rest of Catalonia it rained less, although also with locally heavy showers and storms, especially in other areas of the coast and pre-coast.
