The weather

New peak temperatures this weekend, with rain in sight

Temperatures will peak on Sunday, awaiting a change in the weather before the Diada.

BarcelonaCalm has dominated most regions in the last few hours, following the showers and storms that affected the northeast, some areas of the pre-coastal region, and especially the Ebro River and southern Camp de Tarragona between Thursday afternoon and yesterday morning, where some local rainfall occurred (you'll find all the data at the end of this report). Only in the Valencian Community has the instability continued, with some scattered showers.

The weekend will generally be calm, with more sun than clouds, but with some nuances. The main news will be the rise in temperatures due to the arrival of southerly winds, which will leave above-average values and an overly summery atmosphere for the time of year. The peak of the weather will be between Sunday and Monday, but next week will begin with a significant change in the weather, which will bring rain and a drop in temperatures, especially on Tuesday and Wednesday, just before the Diada long weekend.

Saturday: calm and warmer

The weather will be calm and pleasant today. There will be more sun than clouds overall, although in the Valencian Community and along the Ebro River there will be more cloudy spells and a risk of scattered, light showers, especially in the early and late hours of the day.

Minimum temperatures have dropped to 19°C along the coast and have remained between 13°C and 15°C inland and on the Costa Brava (13°C in Palafrugell). It has been cooler in the Pyrenean valleys, with a minimum of 9°C in Puigcerdà.

The rise in maximum temperatures will be most noticeable in the high areas of the Pyrenees and in the northern regions of Girona, due to the warm southerly wind that will blow moderately in the afternoon. The middle of the day will be warm, with many highs of 27°C to 32°C and some muggy conditions along the coast.

Sunday: summer atmosphere

Temperatures will rise further tomorrow, both day and night. The weather will be warm and summery, with values clearly above average. Most highs will range between 28°C and 33°C, but inland in the Ebro, in the West, in the southern interior of Valencia, and in the center of the island of Mallorca, temperatures could reach or exceed 34°C locally. The heat will be unusually intense for the time of year, with muggy conditions on the coast, where tropical lows will again gain ground.

All this, with the sun occasionally becoming more cloudy or shaded by the passage of high and medium-sized clouds. Intervals of low clouds will remain in the Ebro, while in the afternoon, dark clouds will reach the Pyrenees and the West, with the possibility of some showers in the afternoon, especially in the western Pyrenees. But overall, it will be a rainless and enjoyable day, and above all, a warm one.

Change in the weather just before the Diada (National Day of the National Day).

On Monday, the temperature will drop slightly, although it will still be warm. The week will begin with the approach of an active cold front, which will increase cloud cover and bring the first showers and thunderstorms. The most likely are expected in the afternoon in the western half of the country and the Pyrenees.

Rain could sweep across the country on Tuesday, with local rainfall. It appears that the instability will continue on Wednesday, just before the start of the Diada long weekend. A change in the weather has yet to materialize, but which will also bring a significant drop in temperatures. However, based on the current maps, it appears that the long weekend will be fairly quiet.

Lunar Eclipse

Tomorrow, September 7th, a total lunar eclipse will occur, in which the Earth's shadow will be completely projected onto our satellite. In Catalonia, it will only be visible in the early evening, just as the Moon appears over the horizon around 8:30 p.m. At that time, the eclipse will already be in its total phase and can be observed until approximately 10 p.m.

Balance of showers and storms

Last Thursday, we were hit by the tail end of a cold front that wasn't very active, but enough to reactivate instability. In the afternoon, irregular showers and thunderstorms fell, especially in areas along the central coastal foothills and in the Girona region. Early Friday morning, there were some small amounts of rain between the Costa Daurada and the Ebro Delta, leaving more than 20 or 30 l/m², but very localized. Of note were the 55 l/m² on Buda Island (Montsià). These were fairly localized, but intense at times, while most regions didn't experience a drop. These are the most notable showers and thunderstorms:

  • 55 l/m²: Buda Island
  • 31 l/m²: L'Hospitalet de l'Infant
  • 24 l/m²: Miami Beach
  • 16 l/m²: Riudecanyes
  • 13 l/m²: Marganell
  • 11 l/m²: Vinyols and els Arcs
  • 10 l/m²: Fillers
  • 8 l/m²: Splendor
  • 7 l/m²: Olot
  • 6 l/m²: Vall d'en Bas
