New peak temperatures this weekend, but rain is on the horizon.
Temperatures will peak on Sunday, awaiting a change in the weather before the Diada.
BarcelonaCalm has dominated these last few hours in most regions, following the showers and storms that affected the northeast, some pre-coastal areas, and especially the Ebro River and southern Camp de Tarragona between Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, where some local downpours occurred (you'll find all the data at the end of this report). Only in the Valencian Community has the instability continued, with some scattered showers. The weekend will generally be calm, with more sun than clouds, but with some nuances. The main news will be the rise in temperatures due to the arrival of southerly winds, which will leave above-average values and an overly summery atmosphere for the time of year. The peak of the warm weather will be between Sunday and Monday, but next week will begin with a significant change in the weather, which will bring rain and a drop in temperatures, especially on Tuesday and Wednesday, just before the Diada long weekend.
Saturday: calm and warmer
The weather will be calm and pleasant on the first day of the weekend. There will be more sun than clouds overall, although in the Valencian Community and along the Ebro River there will be more cloudy spells and a risk of scattered, light showers, especially in the early and late hours of the day. Minimum temperatures will drop slightly further, and early in the day it will be generally quite cool, but maximum temperatures will begin to rise.
The rise will be more noticeable in the high areas of the Pyrenees and in the northern regions of Girona, due to the warm southerly wind that will blow moderately in the afternoon. The middle of the day will be warm, with many highs of 27°C to 32°C and muggy conditions along the coast.
Sunday: summer atmosphere
Temperatures will rise further on Sunday, both day and night. The atmosphere will be warm and summery, with values clearly above average. Most highs will range between 28°C and 33°C, but inland Ebro, in the west, in the southern interior of Valencia, and in the center of the island of Mallorca, temperatures could reach or exceed 34°C locally. The heat will be unusually intense for the time of year, with muggy conditions on the coast, where tropical lows will once again gain ground.
All this with sunshine that will be at times more cloudy or obscured by the passage of high and medium-level clouds. Intervals of low clouds will persist in the Ebro, while in the afternoon, storm clouds will reach the Pyrenees and the west, with the possibility of some afternoon showers, especially in the western Pyrenees. Overall, however, it will be a rainless and enjoyable day, and above all, a warm one.
Change of weather at the doors of the Diada
On Monday, the temperature will drop slightly, although it will still be warm. The week will begin with the approach of an active cold front that will increase cloud cover, bringing the first showers and thunderstorms. The most likely are expected in the afternoon in the western half of the country and the Pyrenees.
Rain could sweep across the country on Tuesday, with local rainfall. It appears that the instability will continue on Wednesday, just before the start of the Diada long weekend. A change in the weather has yet to materialize, but it will also cause a significant drop in temperatures. However, based on the current maps, it appears that the long weekend will be fairly quiet.
Balance of showers and storms
On Thursday, we were hit by the tail end of a moderately active cold front, but enough to reactivate instability. In the afternoon, irregular showers and thunderstorms fell, especially in parts of the central coastal foothills and in the Girona region. During the early hours of Friday, there were some small amounts of rain between the Costa Daurada and the Ebro Delta, leaving more than 20 or 30 l/m², but very localized. Of note were the 55 l/m² on Buda Island (Montsià). These were fairly localized, but intense at times, while most regions did not experience a drop. These are the most notable showers and thunderstorms:
- 55 l/m²: Buda Island
- 31 l/m²: L'Hospitalet del Infante
- 24 l/m²: Miami Beach
- 16 l/m²: Riudecañas
- 13 l/m²: Marganell
- 11 l/m²: Vinyols and els Arcs
- 10 l/m²: Fillers
- 8 l/m²: Splendor
- 7 l/m²: Olot
- 6 l/m²: Vall d'en Bas
