The weather

The temperature will return to normal from today, bringing a more autumnal atmosphere.

The maximum temperature recorded at the Fabra Observatory yesterday was the highest ever recorded on November 1st since 1914.

BarcelonaThe Indian summer of All Saints' Day is coming to an end due to the passage of a weak front, which will bring colder air and replace the warm air mass that has kept temperatures 4 to 6 °C above average for this time of year. In fact, yesterday's highs reached almost 26 °C in many areas, and, for example, the Fabra Observatory recorded its highest All Saints' Day maximum temperature in over a century, at 23.3 °C (a short list of other notable readings is included at the end of this report).

Today the weather pattern changes as an Atlantic front crosses the region, bringing showers to some inland areas this afternoon, especially in the Pyrenees, although it has only produced a few light rain showers in the last few hours. North and northwest winds at both ends will be accompanied by a drop in temperatures, more noticeable on Sunday night and especially on Monday.

Change in weather: some afternoon showers in the northeast

The passage of a weak front will bring changes to the weather. Light precipitation arrived during the early hours (1 mm in Lac Redon, 0.5 mm in Ulldeter, and two-tenths of a liter in Núria and Guardiola de Berguedà). This precipitation will continue throughout the day on the northern slopes of the Pyrenees, though it will be light and intermittent. The snow level will hover around 2,500 meters, but it won't be a heavy snowfall. The peaks will end up dusted with snow, especially in the Aran Valley and northern Pallars Sobirà.

During the afternoon, scattered showers are expected in parts of the Girona and Barcelona regions, most likely between the southern Costa Brava and the interior of La Selva, as well as in the northern Maresme. Elsewhere, sunshine will prevail, but strong mistral and tramontana winds will pick up in the southern half of the region, in the Ponent and Empordà areas, where the sea will be rougher, with heavy swells north of Cap de Creus. At night, northerly gusts could exceed 80 km/h in the Empordà, and the mistral will also blow strongly in Els Ports and along the Ebro.

The arrival of colder air will lower temperatures, especially in the north of the region. However, along the southern coast, the wind will blow warm, bringing a brief warm spell, with highs potentially reaching 24°C again on the Costa Daurada, as well as along the central coast and pre-coastal areas. Maximum temperatures will drop by more than 5°C on the northern slopes of the Pyrenees and in many areas of the northeast quadrant.

Temperatures falling, fog and a more autumnal feel

Nights will be colder, as the models indicate, especially on Monday and Tuesday, with temperatures potentially reaching 0°C in the Pyrenean valleys, where frost is expected in the high mountains. Inland, temperatures will range between 2°C and 5°C, and along the coast, they will drop to around 10°C. At least we'll have a more autumnal feel than we do now.

The sky will remain mostly clear, except for the central coast and the southern Costa Brava. The downdraft generated by the Tramontana wind will bring dense clouds from the Mediterranean, and some showers are possible off the coast, potentially reaching the shoreline. The rest of the region will remain clear or with only a few thin clouds. The cold nighttime conditions inland will generate radiation fog, which will appear in the plains of Ponent and Central Catalonia, as well as in some pre-Pyrenean valleys.

Maximum temperatures recorded on Saturday:

  • Santa Coloma de Farners: 26 °C
  • English: 25.5 °C
  • the Carving of Empordà: 25.5 °C
  • Vallirana: 25 °C
  • Torroja del Priorato: 25 °C
  • Girona: 24 °C
