Last day of calm and summer heat before the return of storms and a new cooling down

BarcelonaThe week has started very calmly and with a rise in heat, although without reaching the extraordinary extremes of previous days. A full summer atmosphere with temperatures clearly above average, which yesterday already pushed the mercury up to 37 °C in Vinebre (Ribera d'Ebre) or 36 °C in parts of the northeast, such as the city of Girona. Today the same trend of radiant sun and heat will continue, and it will even peak in the south and in the Ponent region. But this will all be transitory, as on Wednesday a cold front will cross us, which will cause a round of showers and storms in several regions, and a new and clear cooling with the arrival of the north wind. A roller coaster of thermometers that will remind us that autumn is approaching.

Tuesday: sun and summer heat

We wake up again this Tuesday with a morning chill inland and in mountain areas, and more mildness on the coast, where some tropical minimums have been repeated, especially in the city of Barcelona due to theurban heat island effect. Sun and calm will dominate everywhere without exceptions throughout the day, only with some local and harmless cloudiness in the afternoon in the Pyrenees.

Maximum temperatures will remain similar or peak in the west and south, while in the northeast they will already begin to drop. In short, intense and summery heat will continue, with temperatures clearly higher than usual for this time of year. Many values will range between 29 and 34°C, but between 35 and 37°C in the west and the Ebro valley, without ruling out some higher value locally in these sectors.

Weather change on Wednesday

The passage of a cold front will cause a change in the weather on Wednesday. Intervals of clouds will increase throughout the day, and from mid-morning and for the rest of the day, showers and storms will become more widespread. They will mainly affect any point in the Girona and Barcelona regions, locally with strong intensity and accompanied by hail or sleet. During the afternoon, the main event will be concentrated in the northeast, and at night it will move to the coast and pre-coastal areas of Barcelona. Meteocat has already issued the first warnings in these areas for heavy rain.

It will also rain in other areas of the Pyrenees and the Pre-Pyrenees, and from the evening onwards, the showers will also arrive with intensity in some areas of the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands.

A change in weather that will reactivate the north wind at both ends of the country, and that will open the doors to a new and clear cooling. Therefore, thermometers will drop again, with less warm days from then on, and very cool, or even cold nights in mountain areas.
