At the doors of an atypical summer heatwave: 35 ºC will be reached

The thermometers will continue to rise and will mark very high values for the time of year

20/05/2026

BarcelonaTemperatures continue to rise non-stop and this Wednesday over 30 °C have already been exceeded in more parts of Ponent and the interior of the Ebre. Thermometers that will climb even higher on Thursday and will peak between Friday and the weekend, with values between 5 and 10 degrees above average for the season in many cases. We expect a full summer atmosphere, with very advanced heat, something that in recent years is beginning to be common. Many highs are expected between 27 and 33 °C on the pre-coast and inland, especially from Friday onwards, but up to 35 °C or locally more in Ponent and the Ebro valley. We will have to sweat a lot and suddenly retrieve all the summer clothes from the back of the closet. The mercury will be held back more on the coast due to the effect of a still cold sea. A mass of warm air will combine with the anticyclone, with calm and sun in general.

Thursday: more and more heat

The cool night air will not last long, as thermometers will quickly climb with the sunrise. A very warm day awaits us, with many highs between 26 and 31°C in the pre-coastal areas and inland, but locally it will already be possible to reach 35°C in Ponent and the Ebro valley. Temperatures will be more moderate by the sea, with a maximum of between 23 and 25°C.

All in all with a lot of calm and sun in general. Only some low clouds or morning fogs may appear, also in coastal stretches, while late afternoon cloudiness in mountain areas in the north of the country will be anecdotal and will not leave showers.

The heat is peaking

Between Friday and the weekend, the peak of this out-of-place heat episode in May is expected. Many highs will be around 30 °C inland and in parts of the pre-coastal area, and in Ponent and the Ebro valley, 35 °C will be reached or exceeded in some cases. Daytime conditions more typical of July than May, with rather mild nights and some slightly tropical minimums in coastal stretches and in the south.

Calm and sunshine will continue to dominate, with some decorative touches of thin clouds, as well as some fog or low clouds on the coast due to the thermal contrast between the ambient heat and the still cool sea water. Afternoon cloudbursts will again bring some showers to the Pyrenees from the weekend onwards.
