Alert for downpours until the night enters in many regions
The storms and downpours can be strong in areas where it has already rained a lot in the last few days
BarcelonaThe weather gives no respite and this Tuesday we are once again having a round of downpours and storms in a large part of the country. The precipitation started in the south and in Ponent with some heavy downpours that have left between 10 and 50 l/m² in a short time. The most affected region at the moment is Baix Ebre, where the municipality of Xerta stands out, where more than 100 l/m² have fallen in less than two hours and there have been numerous incidents and floods.
The front of showers is moving from southwest to northeast. And be careful, because it may continue to rain in many regions until nightfall, and it will not be until the early morning that the rain will completely leave the northeast. New torrential downpours may occur, also on the coast and the central and northern pre-coastal areas, where it is raining on wet ground. Meteocat maintains many alerts for intense rain, which can leave more than 40 l/m² in half an hour or more than 60 l/m² in three hours.
This is a new round of storms that has a different origin from those experienced in recent days. Today the instability arrives driven by a cold air pocket located in the Atlantic, with a mobile circulation. Therefore, the pattern of static downpours from sea to land that we have had in the last few days with two mesoscale convective systems will not be repeated. Even so, the same warm sea reactivates the rain when it reaches the coast.
Looking ahead to this Wednesday, in the morning there will be a line of showers and storms over the sea, between the Balearic Islands and Catalonia, after having crossed the Valencian Community at dawn. It is likely that these precipitations will again brush the central coast and the north of Mallorca and Menorca. Weather models do not agree on the extent of these showers, but locally they could be strong again. It will be necessary to monitor them. In the afternoon, irregular showers will repeat from west to east, and Thursday will not be clear. But from Friday onwards, it seems that calm will return, although with a clear autumnal cooling.
Wednesday: watching the skies
During the early hours, downpours and storms will fall in the Valencian Community which, once they reach the sea, will reactivate. They will move in a northeast direction between the Balearic Islands and Catalonia, but they may affect points along the coast –especially the central one– and Mallorca and Menorca. We will see to what extent some downpours occur. In the afternoon, irregular showers and thunderstorms will repeat in the Pyrenees, the Pre-Pyrenees, the interior, and the pre-coastal area which, locally, may reach the coast.
Regarding temperatures, the minimums will drop, and we will have cooler nights. However, the maximums will rise slightly and temporarily, especially on the coast and pre-coastal areas. Many values between 23 and 27 °C are expected. At the end of the day, the mistral and the tramontane winds will enter the Empordà and Ebre regions.
Calm and cool weather in sight
On Thursday the weather will not be clear and we will have new showers in the northeast and in the Pyrenees. On the other hand, in the west and in the south it will be sunny. But above all, the north wind will stand out, which will blow strongly in the south of the country and in the Empordà, where the gusts can be notable. From Thursday on, the drop in temperatures will be significant, and the final stretch of the week will be marked by a clearly cooler environment, even cold at night. On Thursday the snow level will drop below 2,000 m in the Pyrenees, and the first dustings of the season can occur at high altitudes.
