How everything goes up... except wages!

A shopper with a cart in a supermarket.

The other day I went into a shopping mall and I was stunned to see the price of a lipstick. Almost fifteen euros! At what point did we normalize it costing so much? I immediately remembered the first time I went to a supermarket that everyone knows today and that, more than twenty years ago, burst onto the scene with force. I left with two carts filled to the top and a bill of 16,000 pesetas, about 96 euros. Two carts! Today, with 100 euros, you barely fill half of one.

And it is not just the shopping. A coffee with milk is around two euros, a soft drink exceeds 2.50, and a menu at a bar can go over 18. Going out to dinner as a family already requires doing the math before leaving the house. But there is a detail that changes everything: prices do not stop rising while many salaries do not rise at the same pace. And herein lies the problem. We are not talking about great luxuries, but about small customs that until recently seemed normal.

We complain, we compare prices and we end up paying, because living is not optional. But until when will we be able to continue balancing?

Perhaps the true luxury will no longer be buying a lipstick or going out to dinner, but reaching the end of the month without having to count every euro.
