British cyclist dies in Tour of Portugal

British rider Finlay Tarling, from the NSN Development team, died this Friday in an accident while participating in the eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal, as reported by the event's organization. In a note published on their social media, the officials explained that Tarling's death occurred after "a serious accident," and the Portuguese channel broadcasting the competition, RTP, suggests that the victim collided head-on with a vehicle not involved in the race, traveling in the opposite direction, after bypassing one of the access controls to the route for reasons yet unknown.

Due to this accident, the stage was suspended with approximately 20 kilometers remaining, and according to the organization, "as a sign of respect and mourning, the podium ceremony will not be held." The President of Portugal, António José Seguro, also lamented the events through a statement in which he expressed his "deep sorrow for the tragic death" of the cyclist. Tarling, born on October 2, 2006, in Wales, joined the NSN academy in 2025, when the Swiss team was called Israel-Premier Tech. The Volta a Portugal was the first major event of his career, and he had excelled in the two time trial stages. Finlay was the younger brother of Josh Tarling, who rides for the Netcompany team.
