The Innovation Day Energia reinforces Catalonia as a driver of innovation in the energy sector

The seventh edition has brought together more than 150 professionals, start-ups and researchers to address new challenges and solutions in sustainable mobility, network integration and the CO₂ economy.

The annual event for industry, business, and research is becoming a fixture on the Catalan calendar as a driving force for innovation in the energy sector. The Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC), the Catalonia Energy Efficiency Cluster (CEEC), and the Energy for Society R&D&I Network (XRE4S), with sponsorship from the Catalan Energy Institute (ICAEN), co-organized the seventh edition of Innovation Day, bringing together research talent and entrepreneurs. deep tech and the Catalan business and industrial fabric.

The event brought together more than 150 attendees at Ca l'Alier, an urban and sustainable innovation center of the Barcelona City Council. The goal of Innovation Day Energia is to promote high-impact innovation in the energy sector, while also fostering technological and investment collaboration to move towards a new sustainable, digitalized, and decarbonized model.

IREC, attached to the Department of Territory, Housing, and Ecological Transition of the Government of Catalonia, in which the Department of Research and Universities also participates, was created in 2008 with the aim of innovating and developing new technological products in the long term. CEEC is a non-profit organization that brings together more than 240 companies and institutions dedicated to promoting the energy transition in our country and whose objective is the development of solutions to reduce energy consumption and emissions. For its part, XRE4S comprises a network of 16 universities and 58 research groups to promote energy technologies in industry and society.

A strategic and essential forum

The Innovation Day Energia has established itself as a strategic and essential forum for discussion. The day's central focus was on the roundtables and innovation forums, which centered on two main themes: sustainable mobility and its integration into the grid, and the CO₂ economy and technologies for capture, utilization, and valorization. The first roundtable explored the challenges and opportunities of electrification and energy interoperability in land and marine environments, with the participation of industry experts. The second roundtable, focused on the CO₂ economy, highlighted models that enable the conversion of CO₂ into valuable products. Subsequently, the innovation forums showcased pioneering projects and advanced solutions in electric mobility, smart grids, batteries, fast-charging systems, hydrogen, and CO₂ capture, mineralization, reforming, and valorization.

At the end of the event, the Merce Lab was presented, the new pre-industrial pilot plant for manufacturing energy devices based on functional ceramic printing technology.
