It's Christmas

The Christmas log awaits you!

Making the Tió de Nadal (the Catalan Christmas log) "poop" is one of the activities that children enjoy most. And perhaps even those who aren't so young anymore, even if they don't admit it. Beyond simply hitting it with a stick to make it drop gifts and sweets, several towns organize experiences centered around this element of Catalan Christmas tradition. We've compiled a list of activities that combine nature, culture, heritage, and entertainment for the holidays.

Tió Mont-rogen is wanted

In Mont-roig del Camp, in the Baix Camp region, Christmas is also celebrated in the mountains. Until January 4th, children and adults can participate in the second edition of "Se busca el Tió Mont-rogenc" (Search for the Mont-roig Tió), an original orienteering activity that combines sport, nature, and tradition. Designed for families, groups of friends, schools, or hiking enthusiasts of all ages, this event invites young and old to set out to find the different "tions" (traditional Christmas logs) hidden along the trails of the municipality, around the Virgen de la Roca hermitage in Mont-roig del Camp. Participants receive a map with three possible routes: green, blue, and red, according to their level of difficulty.

As participants progress along the route, they must discover the hidden landmarks and mark them on their map (there are more than fifty across the three routes). All of them are located in accessible and environmentally friendly places. The route can be followed freely; simply download the map from the website.celareny.cat/tio-mont-rojizoChoose a day and time that suits you best. Remember that, in this case, the clues cannot be taken home; they are meant to be discovered during the activity, which focuses on orienteering and enjoying nature. The Areny Sports Club organizes this experience, which is sponsored by local associations and volunteers.

The Corrections of Saint Margaret and the Monks

Until December 28th, a new edition of Corretions returns to Santa Margarida i els Monjes, in the Alt Penedès region, a family experience that combines nature and tradition centered around the traditional "tions" (fireworks figures). The program consists of five routes that explore urban spaces and natural areas of the municipality, mostly within the Foix Natural Park, where families will find the "tions" that are brought close to the homes of the town's residents. The routes are identified by colors and the name of a natural element: fire, earth, water, air, light, and wood. Along the way, children will discover special spots with challenges and puzzles to overcome. These same elements will also be present at another of Corretions' emblematic locations: Cal Tionaire, situated in the gardens of Molí del Foix, in Els Monjes. There, children and families can visit different scenes with each of the elements and their tions, with sound stories that will serve as the starting point of the magic that makes these characters come to life as they travel through forests and mountains until they reach homes.

Participation in Corretions is free and open to all. The routes can be followed any day of the week using maps available online on the tourism website or the Santa Margarida i els Monjes Town Hall website, or with information from the Corretions guides, which can be found in the main establishments and facilities throughout the municipality. This year, the guides will include new family-friendly maps with the locations of the Corretions, designed for a clearer and more visual experience.

The longest Tió in the world, in Alcover

For Sant Esteve (St. Stephen's Day), Plaça Nova in Alcover, in the Alt Camp region, is filled with excitement to welcome the world's longest Tió (Catalan Christmas log). After a year wandering through the forests and Prades Mountains, eating acorns, pinecones, and moss, the Tió arrives full and ready to "poop" treats for all the children of Alcover. This giant Tió is full of magic, but it has one very important distinction: it's the longest Tió in the world. Measuring 60 meters, it stretches from one end of Plaça Nova to the other, and 500 children help it "poop." To participate, you must register beforehand for free and fill out a form on the Alcover Town Hall website, as places are limited. The "pooping" of the world's longest Tió takes place every year on December 26th at 1 p.m.

This tradition began in the 1980s with the Alcover Sardana Group. In 1999, the group disbanded, and from then on, the town council and the Tió Commission took over the organization of one of the most prominent events of the town's Christmas festivities. Furthermore, Alcover has its own song to make the Tió "poop," which all the children in the town square sing, along with a recorded version performed by students from the Alcover Municipal School of Music.
