Language planning and linguistic services, jobs within the publishing, communication, and linguistic technology sectors, teaching Catalan to adults, teaching in secondary school, in reception classrooms, or abroad, among others, are the main areas of employment for Catalan philology studies. One more year, and it's the third, the Government is once again launching the campaignChoose Catalan Philology to meet a rising demand.

The growing labor demand for specialists in Catalan language and literature has been consolidating year after year. However, the forecast of numerous retirements and new hires requires new qualifications. This is foreseen by both the Consortium for Language Normalization and the Department of Education and Vocational Training. The demand for teachers for adults, secondary education, and welcoming classrooms will increase over the next decade. An expansion and generational shift is also approaching in the teams of linguistic planning technicians within the Catalan public administration, and the private sector is looking for a specialist and versatile graduate profile, capable of working in companies in the editorial, communication, and linguistic technologies sectors.

Granting of scholarships for the second consecutive year

In the presentation event for the 2026-2027 academic year campaign, Minister F. Xavier Vila was accompanied by students of Catalan philology who received scholarships during the previous year. Last year, the program awarded a total of 25 scholarships to students in the field of Catalan philology and Occitan studies in a pilot program. The success of this initiative has led to the grants being re-advertised for the 2026-27 academic year with a monthly allocation of 500 euros.

“Thanks to the scholarship, I chose Catalan philology, as I'm sure many other students will do this year”. This was stated by the students present, who highly valued being able to benefit from the planned adjustments. The first edition of Tria Filologia Catalana introduced the campaign to the public arena and highlighted the need for professionals, while the second incorporated the scholarship pilot program and expanded its presence on social media. This year's edition will consolidate and deepen these lines and add new actions with industry professionals.

A labor market with high demand

The demand to study the degree in Catalan philology is on the rise. In the 2015-2025 period, enrollments grew by 80% and between the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 academic years, during the first edition of the Tria Filologia campaign, they grew by 21%. However, many more are still needed.

The data confirm the high employability of these studies. According to the Agency for Quality of the University System of Catalonia (AQU), 96.7% of Catalan philology students at the University of Barcelona are working, mostly in jobs in their field, and 83% were hired three months after finishing the degree. Choosing Catalan philology is a safe bet.
