Global Studies, a degree to understand and transform the world
The UVic-UCC Global Studies degree offers international training, in English, and with a critical and committed approach to addressing the major challenges of the future.
To respond to the concerns of a generation of young people who not only want to understand the world but also get involved and contribute to improving it, the University of Vic - Central University of Catalonia (UVic-UCC) offers, from this academic year 2024-2025, the degree in Global Studies, designed for students with a clear interest in global social, political, and environmental issues. One of the distinguishing features of these programs, taught entirely in English and in small groups, is that they prepare young people to operate in an international context from day one.
Global Studies It is based on a holistic approach to global reality. Students learn to analyze conflicts, manage international projects, and communicate in multicultural environments. The curriculum combines content from political science, international relations, contemporary history, sociology, law, and economics, among other fields, and promotes the study of global phenomena from diverse perspectives, including multiculturalism, inclusion, and gender.
"The degree in Global Studies prepares students to understand and act in a changing and complex world, without geographical or linguistic limitations. The international focus, the study in English, and the cultural diversity of the students provide a truly global education," says Professor and Degree Coordinator Joan Esculies.
Internships abroad and languages
One of the distinguishing features of Global Studies is the mandatory stay abroad during the final year. This mobility can take the form of an academic exchange or an international internship, and its aim is to "enrich students' educational and personal experiences."Esculias assures. If the internships are not carried out outside the country, they must be in organizations that use English as the working language. This allows them to apply the knowledge acquired throughout the degree and, at the same time, begin their professional careers. Meanwhile, during their studies, students also participate in academic outings and visits to political and social institutions, such as the Cortes Generales in Madrid. "It offers a more practical approach to all the theory we were doing, giving us the opportunity to meet various institutions and people in management positions related to the degree, thus broadening our vision of the studies we are pursuing," explains Aitana Seguí, a Global Studies student at UVic-UCC. "It opens up a wide range of opportunities in very interesting areas."
Commitment and critical spirit
Global Studies trains people capable of operating in an interconnected and complex world. "We aim to train professionals with critical thinking, intercultural awareness, and a transformative vocation. Our goal is for graduates to be able to impact society through international organizations, governments, NGOs, or think tanks, providing an informed and committed perspective," says Esculies.
This multidisciplinary approach, which combines social sciences, humanities, and communication, provides students with a transversal vision essential for understanding phenomena such as migration, the climate crisis, different leaders, and economic imbalances. to the improvement of our society and have the opportunity to influence it," emphasizes the professor and coordinator of the degree. Global Studies is an open door to people who want to build a more just, sustainable, and cooperative world.
