What are the most given names in Catalonia in 2025?

Biel and Júlia, who regain the lead, are the two most popular names

Biel and Júlia lead the ranking of the most popular baby names in Catalonia in 2025, according to data from the Institute of Statistics of Catalonia (Idescat). The names Sofia and Martí lose positions compared to 2024 and, among the children born in 2025 (54,249), the first position is occupied by Biel, with 378 newborns, while 449 girls were born who were given the name Júlia/Julia, thus regaining the leadership after losing it in 2022.

For the first time since the historical series began in 1997, last year Biel debuted as the most given boy's name. In the case of the name Júlia, it had already led the ranking – the first time in 2007 – and regained the position in 2025, after three years. In the boys' ranking, Nil ranked second favorite, with 375 newborns, followed by Marc (371), Jan (347) and Martí (338). As for the girls, Sofia, who had occupied the first position in 2024, was the second most given name last year, with 427 girls, followed by Martina (357), Emma (349) and Ona (344).

By territorial plan areas, Mateo has continued to be the most given name in the metropolitan area of Barcelona; Jan has been the most frequent in the Girona regions and in the Camp de Tarragona; Marc in Terres de l'Ebre and in Penedès; Nil in the central regions; Hugo in Ponent, and Pau in Alt Pirineu i Aran. Regarding girls, Sofia/Sofía has been the most frequent name in the metropolitan area of Barcelona and in Terres de l'Ebre; Júlia/Julia the most given name in the Camp de Tarragona, in the central regions, in Penedès and in Ponent, and Martina has occupied the first position in the Girona regions and in Alt Pirineu i Aran.

After 17 years of decline, birth rates recovered slightly last year. In total, in 2025, a total of 54,249 newborns were born (28,019 boys and 26,230 girls), representing an annual increase in birth rates of 0.8%, according to provisional data released this morning by Idescat. With this, the number of births has slightly recovered and the downward trend observed since 2008 has been broken.
