The USTEC hints at a possible mobilization coinciding with the Pope's visit to Barcelona
The unions present an ultimatum to the Government and assure that if there is no new proposal at today's meeting, they will walk away from the table
BarcelonaNew –and third– consecutive key day on Barcelona's Via Augusta. This Friday at noon, educational unions will meet again with the Department of Education to try to reach an agreement that will unblock the conflict between teachers and the Government, which has been going on for months. Before the meeting, however, the USTEC union –which is the majority in the sector– has redoubled its pressure with a video on social networks in which it hints at the possibility of a mobilization coinciding with the visit of Pope Leo XIV to Barcelona.
In the video, images of teacher demonstrations from the last general strikes are linked with an image of the Pope, as well as an image of the protest action that unions carried out this week to block the entrance to the Sagrada Família. The video ends with a warning: "We are preparing".
Meeting, today at 12 p.m.
At this Friday's meeting at 12:00 PM, the counter-proposal presented by the unions this Thursday is on the table, which, among other things, demands a salary increase of around 500 euros by 2029 for all teachers –478 for primary school teachers and 544 for secondary school teachers–, 6,400 new staff positions (a significant part should be to strengthen inclusive education), payment for overtime hours for school trips, and negotiation of school curricula.
After presenting this counter-proposal, the unions issued an ultimatum to the Government, stating that if they "don't do their homework" this Friday and do not come with a new concrete proposal, they will walk away from the table.
