Així quedarà la Diagonal amb la connexió en tranvia per superficie

BarcelonaAfter years of to-ing and fro-ing and discussions, the works for the tramway connection along the Diagonal already have a start date: it will be on the week of March 7, three weeks from now, when the machines will begin to make one of the most controversial and debated projects in the city of Barcelona a reality. The first phase of the project is expected to be completed by the beginning of 2024, as explained to Betevé by Janet Sanz, the deputy mayor for Urban Planning, and once they are ready, the public transport network will gain three new stations in a 1.5-kilometer stretch: Monumental, Sicilia and Verdaguer. If the schedule is maintained as planned, three years from now work will begin up to Plaza Francesc Macià to continue with the objective of reducing road traffic on Diagonal, since once the TramBaix and TramBesòs are united it is estimated that 225,000 passengers will use this line daily, which will make it possible to eliminate some 12,500 private cars.

The works will start simultaneously at different points on Diagonal, between the stretch that goes from Plaça de les Glòries to Girona street, almost in the same space which since November 2020 has been affected by the works for the new water collector. This coincidence will make it possible to take advantage of the bulk of the traffic diversions that are already in place in this area. Thus, in Besòs direction, traffic will continue to be diverted along Rosselló street (from the central section) or towards Pau Claris street (from the side), and it will be possible to circulate along the side of Diagonal avenue from Bruc street to Bailèn. A novelty is that if currently from València street with Roger de Flor you can take the central lanes of the Diagonal, with the implementation of the tramway this movement will no longer be possible. The recommended routes in the Besòs direction will continue to be Diagonal-Rosselló or the alternative routes along València street or Gran Vía; and in the Llobregat direction, the alternative is Aragó or Mallorca
