BarcelonaTeacher mobilization is cooling down. According to the consultation carried out this week by the unions USTEC, CGT, Intersindical, COS, CNT and the Educational Assembly of Catalonia (AEC), there are more teachers who do not want to go on strike again than those who are calling for a new day of work stoppages. Specifically, of the nearly 33,000 professionals who participated in the consultation—there are 96,000 in the system as a whole—, 16,358 have stated that they are willing to go on strike. In practical terms, this implies that fewer than two out of every ten teachers have indicated that they would like to support a new strike again.

If we focus only on the participants in the consultation—which includes teachers and educational staff—, the result was very close: 50.2% said they are not willing to go on strike, and 49.8% said they are. Of those who said they are willing to stop work again, the majority (about 10,000) opt to strike for one or two days.

What did have massive acceptance within the consultation is the possibility of calling for a new large demonstration. Almost 80% of the participants—25,970—say they would support the call for a demonstration of the entire educational community of the public school system.

In the last consultation held by the unions in June, in which teachers had to say whether they agreed with the pact that the unions had pre-agreed with the Department of Education, more than 40,700 teachers voted against the agreement with the Government. In total, about 43,000 professionals participated in that consultation.

The details, next week

Given these results, in a statement the unions have explained that their proposal is to call for both a demonstration and a new day of strike this quarter. They explain that this proposal will also be transferred to the Educational Assembly that will meet this Saturday and that next week the details of the new mobilizations will be decided and announced.

Beyond these new protests, the educational unions also plan to support the general strike of November 11 to demand improvements in the right to housing throughout the State.
