BarcelonaThe 3rd Court of Instruction in Blanes has sent the man to provisional prison without bail arrested on Saturday for the death of his partner in the same town in La Selva, a crime that the Government has already condemned as the first femicide of the year 2025. The woman was 35 years old and had a minor son. She was found dead last Thursday in a home in the Plantera neighborhood of Blanes. At first, it was not entirely clear what had happened to her, although she had been dead for hours, and the notice spoke of cardiac arrest. However, the autopsy caused a change of script: there were indications of criminality.

This led the Mossos d'Esquadra to arrest the couple this Saturday as the alleged perpetrator of a crime of homicide. The arrested man was brought before the court on Monday, remaining deprived of liberty while the judicial investigation lasts, which will be for a crime of homicide, according to the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC). According to judicial sources, there was no criminal record within the couple. Likewise, the 3rd investigating court received the case on duty and will withdraw so that the case is investigated by the court of violence against women.

The police investigation pointed to a sexist crime, and this Monday the Department of Equality and Feminism also confirmed it. In a statement, it condemned the femicide, the first of the year 2025, and expressed its condolences for the victim. For his part, the president of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, "strongly condemned the sexist murder" of Blanes and stated that it is "urgent" that everyone works to end this scourge. "All efforts are few," said Illa. He also condemned the crime to the Ministry of Equality.

Concentration in Blanes

Also on Monday, a hundred people gathered in Blanes to reject gender-based violence. The rally was called by the municipality's governing team and was attended by councillors in the council and also by the general director for the eradication of gender-based violence of the Department of Equality and Feminisms and the head of the unit against gender-based violence of the Spanish government sub-delegation in Girona. The mayor of Blanes, Jordi Hernández, expressed the municipality's dismay at the events and rejected any kind of violence, especially that which occurs against women.

In 2024, there were 18 femicides in Catalonia, corresponding to 15 women murdered by gender-based violence and three children. Of these minors, two were murdered by gender-based violence along with their mother and one in a femicide linked to the purpose of vicarious violence. Since official data began to be collected in 2012, there have been 149 femicides in Catalonia, of which 9 correspond to children and adolescents murdered in the context of gender-based violence. The number of children orphaned by gender-based violence was 12 in 2024 and almost a hundred in the last decade.
