The incident affecting the 112 service on the Telefónica network has been resolved.
Landline telephone and internet service has been down for hours in several parts of Spain.
BarcelonaAn incident on Telefónica's network knocked out landline and internet services for several companies and public services in Spain for hours on Tuesday, affecting emergency telephone lines in several autonomous communities. The outage, which had a lesser impact in Catalonia, occurred following a network update, according to the company, which declared the incident resolved at midday.
"This morning we had an incident that affected the fixed communications services of some companies and public services [...]. We have activated the incident management committee, isolated the affected nodes, and deployed field personnel to resolve specific cases arising from this incident," a source explained.
In a video message on the social network X, Sergio Sánchez, the company's Director of Operations, Networks and IT, confirmed this version. According to reports just after 12:00, "full service" had been restored except for a few "specific cases" that were being resolved on the ground.
In Catalonia, the impact on the emergency service has been "minimal," according to CAT112 sources consulted by ARA. The same sources confirm that the "contingency system" has ensured that calls have been routed to other telephones and have been handled normally. 061 has also activated its contingency plan and has been operating normally.
In regions such as Valencia, the Basque Country, and Aragon, on the other hand, alternative numbers to 112 have had to be enabled. The Andalusian Regional Government has explained that, in its case, 112 was unable to receive calls between 7:15 a.m. and 8:40 a.m., and call handling has begun to be reactivated. Incidents have also been reported in Extremadura, La Rioja, and Castilla-La Mancha, according to the Efe news agency.
In addition to emergency telephone lines, Telefónica has admitted that there have been impacts on "specific fixed-line communications services (voice and internet) in some companies." In this regard, Caja de Ingenieros has suffered partial impacts to its operations, as explained by the bank through X. During the outage, which impacted communications, in addition to online banking and phone calls, the bank has enabled a WhatsApp service to serve customers.
Other entities consulted by the ACN, such as Caixabank, have assured that their operations have not been affected by the outage, while Banc Sabadell has had a "very residual impact" and the service has operated normally. Likewise, BBVA was not aware of any disruption to the bank's operations as a result of the incident.
The Downdetector website shows how many mobile phone users have been affected by the incident since 3:00 a.m., when trying to make calls or connect to the internet, also according to Efe.
