BarcelonaThis morning, the Department of Justice announced that an inmate has been found dead in his cell at Brians 1. According to the ACN, the man is the karate teacher who accepted a 26 and a half year prison sentence on Tuesday for sexually assaulting his underage students in Barcelona. The events took place between 2015 and 2023, and the teacher was convicted of five counts of sexual assault and abuse.

With Thursday's incident, there have now been nine suicides in Catalan prisons in 2026. In the case of the convicted karate teacher, the Department of Justice specified that he did not have any active suicide prevention program.

His death was discovered this morning during the inmate count, as officials found him "without signs of life" inside the cell. Emergency services were activated, but they were unable to do anything to save his life. The events have been reported to the competent authorities and the corresponding protocols have been activated.

This ninth suicide has taken place at a time when Catalan prisons are experiencing tension due to the increase in the prison population. According to the data that ARA was able to access, the capacity of Catalan prisons is already at 95%. To address this, the Generalitat has proposed measures such as expanding the construction of new modules like those already announced at the Mas d'Enric prison, as well as a new pool of psychologists and educators to cover leaves and substitutions at the centers.
