Some messages on Isak Andic's cell phone are key to putting the police spotlight on his son.
The Mossos d'Esquadra found evidence when they searched the Mango founder's phone after his death.
BarcelonaThe investigation into the death of Mango founder Isak Andic is currently at a critical juncture. The Mossos d'Esquadra are emptying the personal cell phone of his eldest son, Jonathan Andic., investigated in this case being investigated by the Martorell courts. The police have been searching for conversations, photographs, emails, and other potentially suspicious elements for a month. Before reaching this point, one of the elements the police investigation has taken into account is the emptying of his father's cell phone, according to ARA.
Specifically, this newspaper has been able to confirm that the Mossos d'Esquadra found messages with his son on Isak Andic's phone that revealed tension between the two. These compilations are said to have been part of a kind of therapeutic procedure that Jonathan Andic was receiving and from which comments against his father arose; messages that the Catalan police analyzed and were important in ultimately investigating the eldest son of the Mango founder, according to sources familiar with the investigation.
This police focus also comes after Jonathan Andic's statements were, in the opinion of investigators, inconsistent in certain aspects, as was his behavior. For example, his cell phone was changed after the tragic event. However, the same sources emphasize that this is not conclusive evidence, and in no way points to the eldest son's guilt. Rather, it has served the police to continue the investigation and request judicial measures, such as seizing his phone to empty it.
TSJC statement
According to sources consulted by ARA, the search and inspection of his phone was carried out following a judicial authorization. Several legal sources consulted also assert that, in order to issue a court order to seize a cell phone, the person must first be placed under investigation. However, this Friday morning, the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) issued a statement stating that the case "remains secret and, procedurally, at this time it has not been, nor is it, directed against any specific individual." The statement added that "the investigation is being handled by the police force."
This statement caused astonishment in some sectors linked to the investigation. According to Efe, lawyer Cristóbal Martell, who has been advising Jonathan Andic for months, stated that they have not yet been notified that he is formally under investigation. He has confirmed the tapping of the cell phone, and that shortly afterward, the defense filed a petition in court asking the judge for the order that authorized the Mossos d'Esquadra to obtain the device. Martell adds that he has not yet received a response to his request.
The family's entourage
In statements to Europa Press, sources close to the family assure "that they have not made and will not make any comments on the death of Isak Andic." "However, they wish to show their respect with the proceedings that have been carried out and will continue to collaborate, as they have until now, with the competent authorities. They are also confident that this process will conclude as soon as possible and will prove Jonathan Andic's innocence," the same sources affirm.
This is a complex investigation. Nine months ago, the owner of Mango died at the age of 71 while hiking through the Salnitre caves in Collbató. They were alone with their eldest son, and no witnesses of the events emerged. Initially, the Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan police)'s main hypothesis was that Isak Andic's death in the Montserrat mountain range was accidental, falling into the void from a height of approximately 150 meters, a fall that caused his death.
In fact, the same court in MartorellThe court provisionally closed the case in mid-January because it saw no evidence of a crime. But it was eventually reopened. The messages described above and the son's contradictions have been important elements in reaching this point. In parallel, the Mossos d'Esquadra analyzed the conflicts he had had with his father, as well as the financial benefits that could be derived from his transfer.
Until his death, Isak Andic was the richest man in Catalonia and the fifth-richest man in Spain, with a net worth of €4.5 billion, according to the latest report by the magazineForbes; a net worth that increased by 66% in the last year. Andic had three children with his first wife, Neus Raig: the aforementioned Jonathan, Judith, and Sarah. His current partner was Estefanía Knuth.
