How to avoid the summer infection
Candidiasis is a fungal infection that can easily appear due to humidity and heat.
Candidiasis is a fungal infection caused by different species of the fungus Candida. It is usually treatable and causes few complications. A fairly common yeast infection is one that occurs in the vagina and involves itching, redness, and discomfort, as well as abnormal vaginal discharge. In fact, there are different factors that can lead to fungal growth: especially humidity and heat.
Dr. Mireia González, assistant physician at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at Hospital del Mar, explains that fungi are part of the vaginal flora, but that there are certain environments that favor their growth: "In summer, all the factors that cause fungi to develop occur." For example, we sweat more, wear tight clothing, and stay in a swimsuit for long periods of time.
There are also other factors that can promote this infection: according to González, sugary foods also promote fungal growth, as does using panty liners or understood. For this reason, it is necessary to make continuous changes if we are to carry it out.
"All women can get a yeast infection at some point in their lives," says González. Summer can play tricks on us, but stress, low immune system, or a poor diet can also be reasons for suffering from candidiasis. However, just because we've had it once doesn't mean we're prone to it. If we notice symptoms or an initial sensation, taking vaginal probiotics may be enough: "Yeast grows because it has the right conditions, but if we strengthen the vaginal flora to stabilize the pH, we can control it," says the doctor. However, it's best to see a gynecologist or midwife, especially if it's the first time we've seen one, since treatments for candidiasis sometimes require a prescription.
