BarcelonaHeatwave, Sant Joan and over 600,000 vehicles leaving the Barcelona area. Over the next four days, the Servei Català de Trànsit anticipates high mobility on Catalan roads. Between today, Friday, and tomorrow, Saturday, it is estimated that 610,000 vehicles will leave the metropolitan area, and on Sunday, around 290,000 will return. For the eve, the night of June 23rd, the departure of 490,000 vehicles is expected between 12 noon and midnight on Tuesday, and the return of 240,000 on Wednesday, mainly from midday onwards.

To improve traffic flow and reduce accidents during the eve, the joint operation by Trànsit and the Mossos d’Esquadra will limit the speed to 80 km/h for all vehicles on the C‑32 and the C‑31 south, on the B‑23 and on the AP‑7 up to Martorell and on the Pota Nord up to Montgat. Restrictions will also apply to heavy vehicles on the AP-7 between Maçanet de la Selva and l’Hospitalet de l’Infant, and between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday, trucks will not be allowed to use the right lane or overtake on the AP-7 between Sant Celoni and Vilafranca del Penedès, in both directions. Furthermore, additional lanes will be opened in the opposite direction to usual to increase road capacity on the AP-7 north and south, and also on the C-32 in Maresme.

Fifty controls

Traffic measures will be reinforced with radars and signage and information panels. In fact, during these four days there will be control and road inspection flights from the Traffic helicopter. On the other hand, the Mossos d'Esquadra will deploy 286 agents, who will carry out 52 checks on the roads, both main and secondary, towards beach destinations and also inland.

Beyond the usual complications in an outbound and return operation like Sant Joan, Trànsit warns that this time it all coincides with a heatwave and warns of the difficulties of driving in high temperatures, especially for motorcyclists. In addition, Trànsit has also recommended cyclists to "not risk" going out in places and times with a risk of sunstroke.
