The Mas Marroch restaurant, owned by the Roca brothers, catches fire in Vilablareix
The fire, now under control, is burning the wooden dome of the venue where events are held.
BarcelonaTen fire crews are working to extinguish a fire, now under control, at Mas Marroch, the Roca brothers' event restaurant in Vilablareix (Girona). The fire is burning in the establishment's wooden dome, and there are no injuries, the fire department reported via social media.
Speaking to Catalunya Ràdio, sommelier Josep Roca explained that the flames had ravaged the roof of Mas Marroch's terrace, known as the agora. "It's a space made of wood and dry stone, and that made for a blaze that raged," he said. The fire burned a third of the banquet hall and affected the rear storage area, an annex that served as a kitchen, and one of the rooms. Firefighters focused on protecting the adjacent building, a 15th-century Gothic farmhouse, which remained "intact."
Firefighters received the call at 4:33 a.m. and declared the fire under control by 7:00 a.m. They are now focusing their efforts on protecting the farmhouse. According to Roca, the cause of the fire is unknown. In fact, the restaurant was closed yesterday and no work was done. "We are saddened and resigned [...] We left many intangible things behind," he said, while also making it clear that they are already thinking about reopening.
The dome of Mas Marroch, a structure over twenty meters in diameter and ten meters high, was an engineering marvel built according to ecological architectural principles. It was located in a space that hosted events and banquets, including the 20th Michelin star awards ceremony.
