A baby dies after a clandestine circumcision in Almería.
A judge has sent the man who operated on him without medical training to prison and is also investigating the boy's parents.
BarcelonaThe Civil Guard has arrested three people for the death of a baby last Sunday after allegedly performing a clandestine circumcision at a home in Roquetas de Mar (Almería). The three detainees are the parents of the 40-day-old baby and the man who performed the circumcision at home. In the case of this third man, who lacked medical training, a court has sent him to provisional prison. The parents, however, were released provisionally after being brought before the Court of First Instance and Investigation 7 of Roquetas de Mar.
Both the couple, of Malian origin, and the man who circumcised the baby are being investigated for alleged reckless homicide, and as the investigation progresses, the court will clarify whether other alleged crimes may be involved. When they were brought before the court, the baby's father testified before the judge, but the mother was not physically fit to do so. Both will have to appear in court every two weeks while the investigation is ongoing, and as a precautionary measure, they are also prohibited from leaving Spain.
For his part, the man who circumcised the baby only answered questions from his lawyer before the judge, but refused to answer the Prosecutor's Office. According to the High Court of Justice of Andalusia (TSJA), the man does not have the necessary professional qualifications to perform a medical procedure of this type, and the procedure was also carried out at the family home without meeting minimum hygiene standards.
He was taken to the emergency room.
The operation was performed on Sunday, and the baby suffered severe bleeding afterward. His parents rushed him to the municipal health center. He was admitted around 9 p.m. on Sunday, but the medical staff were unable to save his life.
Sources from the Almería Command confirmed to Efe that on Monday the Civil Guard arrested the baby's parents, as well as the man who allegedly performed the circumcision on the child, and conducted a body search related to the case.
