BarcelonaA 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck southern Spain on Monday morning. According to the National Geographic Institute (IGN), it occurred at 7:13 a.m. off the coast of Almería between Cape Palos and Cape Gata, approximately 32 kilometers offshore, taking the municipality of Níjar as a reference point.
The earthquake was felt most strongly in eastern Andalusia and Murcia, but also to a lesser extent in other parts of southern Spain and Portugal, as well as northern Morocco. Social media has been filled with messages from local people who have woken up frightened. Many of these people are tourists spending their summer vacation in this coastal area.
The earthquake was recorded two kilometers offshore. Despite its magnitude, no damage has yet been reported, mainly because the epicenter was far from inhabited areas. It is noteworthy that Google's automatic seismic alert system for Android devices has sent alerts to users in the area. Andalusia's 112 emergency service has received dozens of calls related to this phenomenon, especially from the provinces of Almería and Granada.
