10,000 fewer vehicles: this will be the transformation of the N-II and the C-32 in Maresme

The project foresees a future cycle path that will run through the entire region along the coast

18/07/2026

BarcelonaIt is one of the historical demands of Maresme and this Saturday the Government has begun to give it shape. Two and a half years ago – still with the government of Pere Aragonès –, the State and the Generalitat signed an agreement for the transfer of 420 million euros to unblock the works to pacify the N-II. Now, President Salvador Illa has presented the deployment of the so-called Conveni Maresme to the mayors of Maresme, which accumulates 384 million from the pact until 2032. Among other things, it foresees reducing traffic on the N-II by 10,000 vehicles, a road that will have one lane per direction in a large part of the region and for which better connectivity with the C-32 will be sought.

In this way, the N-II has been divided into different sections, with projects underway, but the first to be approved has been that of Mataró, where the works will begin in early 2027. The majority of the national road sections will have one lane per side, but, due to the characteristics of Mataró, it has been decided to maintain the format of double lanes per direction at some point on the road.

The agreement also foresees more and better accesses to the C-32 and the executive projects for five interchanges in Teià, Premià de Mar, Cabrils/Vilassar de Mar, Alella - El Masnou and Sant Andreu de Llavaneres are already being drafted. It is also planned that in the autumn the projects to improve the interchange with the C-32 in Calella and Pineda de Mar will be made public. All this should allow 10,000 fewer vehicles per day to circulate on the N-II. It should be taken into account that it is a road where, in certain points, a daily traffic of up to 30,000 vehicles can accumulate.

A cycle lane throughout the Maresme

On the other hand, within the N-II pacification project, the configuration of a new cycle path and continuous pedestrian walkway throughout Maresme is also included. Therefore, a 40 km cycle lane is planned along the coast, running from Montgat to Malgrat de Mar. To achieve this, work will be carried out on four sections totaling 9 km; one located between Mataró and Llavaneres, another in Arenys de Mar, a third between Canet and Sant Pol de Mar, and a last one between Sant Pol and Calella. These are all interurban sections where a cycle lane is incorporated into the N-II to provide continuity to the parts that do not have a promenade along their route. The investment to connect these 40 km of cycle path will be almost nine million euros.

Among the actions of the Maresme Agreement, it is also planned to establish a bus and bicycle lane called BRCAT, from Blanes to Lloret, and to improve the link between the C-32 and the GI-600 to enhance traffic flow at this final point of the road.
