https://en.ara.cat/media/the-fall-of-isak-andic-loop_129_5756216.html

On Saturday, Col·lapse interviewed Francisco Marco, director of the detective agency Método 3, to explain the defense's version of Jonathan Andic. He was, therefore, a biased guest, who was hired by the lawyer Sebastián de Juan. With his usual indifference, Jordi González said he doubted whether to call it homicide, accident or murder. “Accident,” Marco replied, emphatically. And González heeded him: “Accident,” the presenter repeated. How easy it is to impose a narrative. The detective spoke about the video of Isak Andic's fall months before his death. He explained, mysteriously, that "an important person from this city" had put them on the trail. Before showing the video to the audience, he described it to condition the viewer: "Isak Andic, just and plop! Falls". The onomatopoeia plop is significant, like an acorn falling from a tree. And he added: "But the important thing about this video is that he doesn't put his hands out". But in the images, it is seen that Andic puts his hand on the step of the stairs to avoid hitting his head. Once again, the detective was already telling us what we should see and think. He was constructing the narrative. Marco referred to Isak Andic as "a gentleman who has a knee condition" and who suffers from "a natural, uncontrolled loss of his legs". He also defined the fall as a "loss of verticality". This supposedly technical use of language was not accidental. It contrasted with the colloquial language he used to describe the work of the Mossos. He spoke of the "fables" they invent, the "fabrication" of evidence, and even used sarcasm to discredit them: "“One of the magnificent pieces of evidence that this policeman says...", he commented with contempt. When Jordi González asked him about the origin of that security video, Marco said: “The gentleman, poor me, who saves Isak Andic from getting into a fight, when he finds out who he is, he asks for the images himself and records them from the monitor with his mobile”. The presenter asks: “To keep them as a souvenir?””, and Marco confirms: “To keep them as a souvenir”. Neither González nor Mayka Navarro – who was participating in the interview – asked him how such an unheard-of frivolity was possible. Marco insisted that this mysterious man was the one who warned “a person close to the environment of La Vanguardia” about the video, and repeated that it is about “a very important family in this city”. A way to give him authority. The most serious and grotesque thing is that while they were talking, the program kept looping Andic's fall, over and over again, on the set's screen. The way of dehumanizing the dead, of turning him into a meme, of reducing him to a test, of repeating the image of the falling man to implant it in our minds is alarmingly insensitive. Marco, by the way, explained that sooner or later we would also see some images they had recorded of people being thrown from the mountain tied with harnesses to reproduce the fall, and he assured that if we saw them, “our souls would shrink”. You already know what the next chapter of the defense will be.

And, for this reason, we have heard a detective declare on RAC1 that the Mossos sergeant does not care "a shit about what happened on the mountain", that he is acting thinking that thanks to the case he will end up appearing on Crims and that the judge in charge of the case is a kind of substitute figurehead without personality who the police have "brainwashed" into dictating the actions that suit the Mossos. Simultaneously, the defense has distributed among some media the video of Isak Andic stumbling, ending up on the ground, with the intention that we understand that, if he had knee arthritis, why couldn't he have accidentally stumbled also on Montserrat and fallen to his death on the day of his death? The defense of the founder of Mango's son will know what it's doing, but this whole line of communication is pathetic. In an extraordinarily painful case for the family and considerably sensitive for the brand, it adds the missing touch of morbidity to invite society to choose, as if this were a derby, between a crooked cop who acts on his own and manipulates an inexperienced judge, and a son so greedy and unscrupulous that he is capable of parricide.19th-century serial novels were already full of public judgments about scandalous cases that divided society. We haven't advanced much. Today, reputational communication is played out without ethical limits, because facts don't matter as much as the narrative about them reaching people's gut so they are thoroughly convinced.

Andic's temporary withdrawal comes a week after the Mossos d'Esquadra arrested him, accused of the homicide of his father, Isak Andic, who died in Collbató in December 2024. The eldest son of Mango's founder, who avoided provisional prison after paying a one-million-euro bail, has sent an open letter to the staff in which he defends his innocence and expresses his "frustration" with the situation he is in.

This is not just a thesis constructed in a laboratory, but one that has a reflection in reality. The case of Mango, the textile empire founded by Isak Andic, is a good example. The company closed the past year with historic figures, despite the sudden death of its founder in a fall from a cliff in the Montserrat area. This same week, the Mossos arrested his eldest son, Jonathan, who was accompanying him on that excursion, for allegedly causing him to fall. Subsequently, he was released after paying a bail of one million euros.

According to the order, however, the then CEO of Mango Man learned in mid-2024 of his father's intentions to create the foundation. Following this, the evidence obtained by the Mossos reflects a "notable change" in the detainee's behavior, who "would have acknowledged that his attitude towards money is not correct."The order links, in this sense, this change of attitude with the excursion to the caves of Collbató in which Isak Andic suffered the fatal accident.

https://en.ara.cat/opinion/the-andics-and-the-morbid-curiosity_129_5742899.html

It is quite disheartening that, as soon as the news of Jonathan Andic's arrest appeared as an accused (but not guilty, nor tried, nor sentenced) in his father's death, the reaction of many compatriots was to wonder when Carles Porta would make an episode of Crims. The popular interest (or at least, what could be seen on Twitter) reached the point where Porta himself was forced to publish a tweet reminding good people that this would be jumping the gun. (But he also announced that they “will try to do the Andic case”, because indeed the program consists of documentary and dramatized recreations of real-life crime cases). Nor should we be scandalized by things that are more than known. Crime is morbid, parricide is morbid, the crimes and parricides of the rich and the very rich are even more morbid (because, yes, the mob is thrilled when the powerful fall into the same mud as the rest of mortals: that's what classic tragedies are about), and all this morbidity, when it hits the right note of success, always sells enormous quantities of whatever: tickets, copies, downloads, viewers. However, crime is not a trivial matter. It is sad and sordid, as we know from Dostoevsky, who in Crime and Punishment narrates a crime among the poor. It is also philosophical and chilling, as Tolstoy teaches us in The Kreutzer Sonata, a husband who kills his wife, in a well-to-do marriage, because he cannot bear the sexual act. Liberating and abysmal, as we read in The Infanticide by Víctor Català, or vengeful and dark as in The Cask of Amontillado, by Edgar Allan Poe. It can still be, moreover, hilarious, as Thomas De Quincey demonstrates in The Murder Considered as One of the Fine Arts. It can become a source of entertainment when presented as a puzzle to be solved, as in the infinity of stories (literary, cinematic, television) that follow the schemes of the stories of Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, or Inspector Maigret. We must naturally add the roughness and murkiness of the American hard-boiled, the coldness of the French polar, or the Mediterranean illuminations of the Italian giallo. Things become less interesting when they fall into sensationalism, opportunism, or a kind of catharsis for citizens of declining national communities (“it's just that we, if we set our minds to it, are also capable of killing each other, you know”). There are two more references, Truman Capote's novel In Cold Blood and Emmanuel Carrère's The Adversary, which have become easy justifications for all sorts of programs, podcasts, and more novels of what is known as true crime, a denomination where what has real power of attraction is more the true than the crime: an audience eager to consume recreations of real crimes, with their blood and guts, to then go to sleep warm. And who, when they hear the news of a sensational crime, already Pavlovianly imagine the narration that their favorite program will make. It is, also, an image of a country.

With permission, of course, of the news about Zapatero's imputation: Spanish media were full of it, doing very exhaustive live specials, with little time to report on anything else. Sara Loscos, on Tot es mou, spoke of "the image of the day and beyond". Without a doubt, it was. All the news programs used it, specifying that the detainee was handcuffed and, in some cases, repeating the scene on several occasions. On Informativos Telecinco they replayed the accused's journey with the mossos entering and leaving the courts up to six times. They specified that Andic was cabizbajo y esposado (head down and handcuffed), to emphasize the image. The snapshot also served to illustrate the news on studio screens and reference the story. The detainee's social status in this context was the morbid element. There were headlines that served to add sensationalism and drama to the case. On Mañaneros on La 1, they asked on a screen caption: ¿Mató a su padre por la fortuna de Mango? (Did he kill his father for Mango's fortune?), and on Informativos Telecinco they announced it as La herencia envenenada (The poisoned inheritance), to delve into the details of the story. Most of the programs took a retrospective look at the case to refresh viewers' memories. Some news programs even returned to the Montserrat area near the scene of the events. They interviewed lawyers, criminologists, and crime experts to recall the most sordid details and some theories that had been put forward in the past year. On "Tot es mou", the discussion served as a strategy for speculation., the discussion served as a strategy for speculation. In the news, there was another differentiating fact that caught the attention. At Antena 3 Noticias, they pixelated the faces of the Mossos d'Esquadra who accompanied Andic to protect their identity. At La Sexta Noticias, on the other hand, they pixelated the detainee and left the faces of the police visible. In the rest of the news programs, they did not erase anyone's image. There is no single criterion or clear approach in the decision.Meanwhile, in X, Carles Porta responded to viewers' requests: “Of course we will try to cover the Andic case, but now is not the time. Allow me to remind you that a detainee is not guilty even if they are sent to prison. A trial and a sentence are necessary. We have to wait and see how everything evolves”. The proof of the need to spectacularize the story and the audience's impatience to discover the details. A voracity that seems to make us increasingly insensitive to tragedy.
