Similarly, the speech by Canadian Liberal Prime Minister Mark Carney at the Davos meeting a month ago is opening a solid path toward what should be European self-determination to break free from the new framework of multipolar imbalance being established by the United States and China, with the indispensable collaboration of Russia.

Among the dead was the suspected shooter, who committed suicide, police said. Authorities have identified the shooter as an 18-year-old woman with mental health issues, but have not released details about a possible motive. Officers arrived at the school two minutes after receiving an alert, at 1:20 p.m. (local time), and found six people dead inside. Two more bodies were found at a nearby residence in an incident that appears to be related to the shooting. Another person died while being transported to a hospital.

Thus began Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's forceful and applauded speech at the Davos Economic Forum on Tuesday. For nearly 20 minutes, the Liberal leader of the United States' neighbor spoke about the breakdown of the world order, the end of a beautiful story, and the beginning of a brutal reality in which geopolitics between the great powers is subject to no limits. He called on the "middle powers" to unite and "act together" in a world where "the rules-based order is fading away." In the field of international relations, Carney's assertion that "the old order is not coming back" has been interpreted as an exemplary diagnosis of the current geopolitical situation. But in the current context, with Trump's threats to annex Greenland With the aggression against Venezuela still simmering, Carney's words have also been seen, in part, as a criticism of the southern neighbor. And it's not the first time the Canadian prime minister has confronted Trump.

This is a way of acknowledging that Donald Trump's trade war is forcing Canada to seek new markets, including in China. Chinese President Xi Jinping supported the "healthy and stable development" of China-Canada relations, which will benefit both countries and also "global stability and prosperity." The two leaders championed multilateralism. From the Great Hall of the People, in Beijing Square, they declared a new stage of collaboration and a commitment to overcome their past conflicts. These positive words have a direct commercial impact. For its part, China will reduce tariffs on Canadian canola seeds. For now, this is the most visible aspect of the agreement, which aims to increase trade and reduce, or in some cases eliminate, bureaucratic barriers. Previous tensions.

Mark Carney's visit is the first by a Canadian head of government since Justin Trudeau's in December 2017. At that time, relations between the two countries were good, but they deteriorated rapidly when Canada arrested Meng Wanzhou, a Huawei executive and daughter of the company's founder. The arrest was made on a US warrant when Meng stopped over in Canada, where she held several residences. China responded by arresting two Canadians in the People's Republic—Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor—accusing them of espionage. Tensions escalated with reciprocal sanctions until 2021, when diplomatic mediation secured the simultaneous release of all three. However, in 2023, Canadian intelligence expelled a Chinese diplomat and accused Beijing of attempting to interfere in the general elections. Canada has a large Chinese immigrant community and has also been the destination for many dissidents and residents of Hong Kong who sought refuge after the curtailment of freedoms in the former British colony. In 2024, the disagreement became commercial, resulting in a tariff dispute: Canada penalized Chinese electric vehicles and steel, and Beijing responded with increased tariffs on Canadian canola, pork, and seafood.

It's grown in abandoned farmhouses in Les Garrigues, in the forests of Pallars, in abandoned industrial buildings in the Barcelona metropolitan area, and in houses built on the outskirts of many towns in La Selva. "In Vidreres and Maçanet, there are housing developments where every other house has a cannabis plantation inside," explain the police. However, despite Catalonia becoming the continent's main supplier, marijuana is now also arriving from abroad. The Spanish Tax Agency has seized 1,214 kilos of marijuana from Thailand and Canada at El Prat Airport and the Port of Barcelona. However, this figure doesn't include the 467 kilos that entered through the Port of Huelva and another 642 kilos that Canadian police seized at the Port of Montreal, which were also headed for Barcelona. This amounts to more than two tons of drugs seized in seven operations over the last six months.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer formally announced this Sunday, in a pre-recorded video, the recognition of the State of Palestine, an announcement made at the same time as his counterparts from Australia and Canada, members of the Commonwealth. The announcement is part of a wave of similar pronouncements from Israel's traditional allies, which seek to halt the Israeli government of Benjamin Netanyahu's policy of wiping the Palestinians off the map, while seeking to isolate Hamas and force it into an unconditional surrender of Gaza. Currently, 147 UN member states, including Spain, recognize Palestine. Portugal has now joined the party, and France (the other former colonial power in the Middle East), Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta, and possibly New Zealand and Liechtenstein will also be added.
