Smoke—and smoking—is integral to the aesthetics of photography. Throughout the 20th century, smoking was used as a creative and narrative element to create more compelling, transgressive, and modern images. Smoke and the smoker serve to reveal more complex or ambiguous individuals. Smoke expresses the fleeting nature of the moment. Through smoke, photography becomes a snapshot, rising like an invisible thread in popular culture. Despite its known dangers, the ritual endures, laden with symbolism. We journey through images, exploring the history that links smoke to photography, connecting this habit with black and white images that evoke another era and a bygone aesthetic.

This year, the competition brought together 396 photographs of astonishing quality, divided into six categories encompassing students of all levels—primary, secondary, high school, vocational training, and university—as well as teachers and other members of the public. Each category has two prizes, in addition to special awards for photomicrography and research photography, underwater photography, and the ARA newspaper prize, dedicated to images with a photojournalistic approach and documentary value. With this exhibition, the College wishes to recognize the talent and curiosity of all participants, as well as the work of the jury and the support of the collaborators. A celebration of life seen up close, through lenses that capture what often escapes our notice. The winning image of the ARA newspaper's special prize – which can be seen at the top of the report – was for a minimal yet powerful scene, with the author's personal vision and the ability to capture the plasticity and beauty of the animal, without losing the documentary and reportage sense.

After nearly seven decades of dormancy, the volcano awoke, and despite warnings from scientists, the country was unprepared for the catastrophe. A mudslide of mud and rocks—descending from 5,000 meters above sea level—buried the city of Armero, in the department of Tolima, wiping it off the map and causing the deaths of more than 23,000 people. That night, the face of Omaira Sánchez, a 13-year-old girl trapped in the mud, became a global symbol of pain and helplessness in the face of nature. Omaira ultimately died, surrounded by emergency services, who were powerless to save her life. Her farewell words, full of love and hope, became a poignant reminder of the devastation. Weekly report, from TVE, impacted an entire generation that the memory of their intense gaze continues to challenge.

Born in 1899 in present-day Ukraine, Arthur Usher Fellig chose this pseudonym when he began working as a photographer in New York, where he emigrated in 1909. A prominent photographer with a very personal style, his high-contrast street photographs ended up in the spotlight. He captured the Lower East Side of the American city in the 1930s and 1940s. Much of his work documents realistic scenes of urban life, crime, injuries, and deaths. This work is a showcase of his documentary talent. Using infrared negative film, he photographed the audience at several movie theater screenings in the city. These are some of the photographs that the Getty Agency is distributing from its catalog of the International Center of Photography in New York.

Yesterday, a total lunar eclipse took place, a phenomenon in which the Earth's shadow is completely projected onto our satellite. The eclipse—known as a blood moon for its red tones—was visible in all its splendor, especially in Central Asia. In Catalonia, it was visible from early afternoon, but in cities like Barcelona, clouds initially obscured it, making it a bit of a wait. After the eclipse, a spectacular full moon could also be enjoyed.

In his understanding of science, this understanding is enhanced when art and science come together.

Last Thursday, June 12th, it was quite hot in the afternoon in Vilanova de Sijena: around 34 degrees. There were only a few days left until the museum's board meeting on Monday, during which Barcelona City Council, the Generalitat (Catalan government), and the Ministry of Culture will discuss how they will comply. the Supreme Court ruling which requires the return to Aragon of the mural paintings in the monastery's chapter house and, at the same time, how will they guarantee their conservation. here?" At the beginning of the tour, the guide tries to get the first shift of visitors, nine people in total, two of them journalists from the ARA, to come out from a patch of shade where they have taken refuge to better appreciate a detail of the building. The visitors are two retired couples from Zaragoza and a group made up of two women and a middle-aged man. They meet one of the workers who opened the door and who looks after the garden in the monastery courtyard. The Zaragozans know him because he was recently interviewed in the local press, and the others give him mementos from a relative. burned during the Civil War. Very soon, the guide also talks about the paintings in the chapter house, which were "stolen and plundered."

A silence of death and destruction. Then came the sound of volunteers' boots and shovels. Then the pump trucks and Kärcher pressure washers. Now, four and a half months after the DANA disaster, the soundtrack of the affected towns in Horta Sud is the sound of drills, hammers, and steep slopes. Everywhere you look, workers are working on the ground floors. In the Valencian Country, the time for reconstruction has arrived, and the streets have only just returned to some semblance of normality a few weeks ago once the mud was removed. But it's only an appearance, of course. Because every inhabitant has terrible stories from that night. The physical scar will take years to disappear, but the other may never do so. Perhaps that's why these days another sound can be heard mixed with the construction work: the children's firecrackers, anticipating a time of celebration, the Fallas, which should serve to begin to turn the page and leave so much misery behind.
