The far-right international arrives in the European Parliament

BrusselsThe European far right has gone from harshly criticizing the existence of the European Union to wanting to play a decisive role, abandoning its desire to destroy the common project in order to exploit the institutions for its own purposes. This Tuesday, in fact, it landed the far-right international in the European Parliament in an event promoted by Patriots for Europe, which Santiago Abascal (Vox) presidesand European Conservatives and Reformists, led by former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.

These two leaders were the most prominent voices at the far-right meetings held in the European Parliament this Tuesday, but ultraconservative leaders and organizations of all stripes participated. This was the seventh summit of the Political Network for Values ​​(PNfV), an international organization that brings together far-right politicians from around the world. Last year they held a similar meeting in the Spanish Senate with the approval of the People's Party (PP).

Political representatives from across Europe and especially Latin America participated in the summit, from countries such as Paraguay, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, and Mexico, among others. In total, speakers from some twenty nationalities appeared, the events lasted all day, and this year the summit is titled Freedom of expression vs. regulated expression: strengthening the pillars of democracyThe intention is to denounce the alleged censorship and cancel culture suffered by reactionary discourses.

Beyond political leaders, representatives of civil organizations and entities, such as the Spanish Advocats Cristians or the Hungarian Civic Association, which hold positions against abortion, euthanasia, minorities, immigration, and, among other things, LGB rights, have also attended.

The limitations of the European Parliament to prevent the act

Despite the fact that the event took place inside the European Parliament building in Brussels, the Parliament is washing its hands of the matter and claiming it has no involvement. Parliamentary sources explained to ARA that the events were organized by the two far-right groups, ECR and Patriots for Europe, and were held in the rooms and with the funds allocated to them based on their representation. In fact, they explained that all MEPs and groups can hold these types of events and that they organize them "regularly." The only control and obligation imposed by the European Parliament is that all political representatives, as well as their parliamentary groups, must register all meetings and events held within the parliamentary buildings on the transparency portal.
