The decisive debate to replace Xavier Trias
Junts faces a key appointment to choose between four possible mayoral candidates
BarcelonaThis Friday afternoon, the decisive battle to replace Xavier Trias as the lead candidate for Junts in the Barcelona municipal elections is to be fought. It is a four-way duel that has been heating up in recent days due to the push by part of the leadership for deputy Pilar Calvo as the future mayoral candidate instead of the favorite and current municipal leader, Jordi Martí, Trias's right-hand man and a continuist regarding the legacy of the ex-convergent totem. But Calvo's efforts to win over fellow candidate Glòria Freixa – a liberal and pragmatic deputy – have failed, as have the attempts by part of the leadership to convince lawyer and former deputy Jaume Alonso-Cuevillas to abandon the race – as he himself has revealed.
It will not be a two-way duel, but a four-way one – all from Sarrià-Sant Gervasi–, and this Friday's contest will be key for the 935 members in the Catalan capital to choose one of the options this weekend. It will be interesting to see how some moves by members of the leadership and those close to former president Carles Puigdemont – such as Gonzalo Boye – in favor of Calvo have been interpreted, which have caused internal perplexity, despite full public neutrality. Puigdemont's favorite was national spokesperson Josep Rius, who withdrew from the race when Martí announced he wanted primaries, the process the leadership wanted to avoid.
because I saw that it was being considered internally in these terms and asked for it to be avoided.
