The "damned war" that haunts Feijóo and the PP

BarcelonaWhen Pedro Sánchez dusted off the slogan “No to war”, he knew perfectly well what he was doing. The confusion it has caused in the PP is such that the best response Feijóo's spin doctors could come up with in Wednesday's session was: “No to war and no to you”.

This phrase, far from being a brilliant retort, perfectly summarizes all the traumas the PP carries. “No to war” because they cannot repeat the mistake of 2003, when Aznar's support for the Iraq war galvanized the left, but also “no to you” to make it clear that they are not buying into the left's narrative, when in reality they are, and they cannot hide the rage they feel that Pedro Sánchez has built an international profile in opposition to Donald Trump.

Feijóo's problem is that he cannot distance himself from the Iraq war because Aznar is still the spiritual father of the PP and has never, ever apologized or repented of that decision. What's more, when he was asked about the current intervention by the US and Israel, he demanded that they finish the job and not even think about leaving the fall of the ayatollahs unfinished.

In this context, another ghost appears to Feijóo, that of Mariano Rajoy, who in 2004 saw himself ousted from Moncloa (he was already there as vice president) due to the management of the 11-M attacks. But it is said that when Rajoy went to see Aznar after the elections, he made a very bitter comment: “You and your damned war!” The phrase that summarizes the Rajoyist vision of life, and which Feijóo shares, is another one that Jesús Posada also told Aznar: “Less Syria and more Soria”, meaning, fewer international dreams and more keeping one's feet on the ground.

But Aznar did have a dream, which was to turn Spain into a preferred partner of the United States and Great Britain and distance himself from the Franco-German axis and the EU itself. Seen with today's eyes, Aznar would have a geopolitical position similar to that of Viktor Orbán, the number one enemy of the European Union.
