Barcelona"Being on the left means taking on great challenges. And achieving them". The New York Assembly member, Zohran Mamdani, and the Spanish president, Pedro Sánchez, show harmony in the latest video that the New York city council has uploaded to its social networks. In an informal tone, even though both are dressed in formal wear, the two political leaders dedicate themselves to throwing paper balls into a trash can. And as the message accompanying the tweet says, they end up making all of them, despite the risks they take symbolically: Sánchez opts for the skyhook, the hook shot patented by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, one of the great legends of the NBA, and Mamdani dares with the shot with his eyes closed that Michael Jordan ironically dedicated to Dikembe Mutombo.
It is evident that Sánchez's trip to the United States had an objective beyond the United Nations Assembly. The Spanish president, self-appointed as the great benchmark of international progressivism at a time of the rise of the far-right, has long been cultivating relationships beyond Europe, where left-wing governments are scarce. And in the United States, there is little debate that Mamdani embodies the hope of the left during Donald Trump's second term.
The containment wall against the far-right has been Pedro Sánchez's main electoral argument for years, and this is precisely the strategy that the Moncloa is trying to perfect with an eye on the next Spanish elections. In New York, the PSOE leader snubbed Donald Trump for "scheduling reasons", met with the interim president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, and defended the UN against those who want to weaken it. A few days of disconnection from the reputation crisis he has been experiencing in the country for some time, although some Harvard students took it upon themselves to remind him of the corruption cases surrounding his government and that the migration emergency in Ceuta is still unresolved.
