Mazón's call to Feijóo the day after the funeral for the victims of the DANA storm

The Valencian president precipitated his resignation after being booed by relatives

MadridThe booing of state funeral for the victims It was the trigger. Alberto Núñez Feijóo had invited Carlos Mazón to an in-person meeting on November 7th to analyze the political situation in the Valencian Community a year after the devastating floods, but the meeting will no longer take place. The Valencian president decided last Thursday to precipitate his resignation when he called Feijóo to tell him that he "couldn't take it anymore," according to sources within the PP's national leadership. They claim it was the first time the president of the Valencian government had offered his resignation.

From then on, the two leaders exchanged calls throughout most of the weekend to try to finalize this announcement, but above all, Mazón's successor. It was a scenario that the two leaders were unable to agree upon, and which... when the Valencian president appears this MondayThe issue remains unresolved. In fact, the move made by the Valencian PP on Saturday attempts to get ahead of the curve or, at least, demonstrate that their preferred candidate, Vicent Mompó, is not the same as the national leader's choice, María José Catalá (whom Feijóo's inner circle is now avoiding confirming as their proposal). And this reveals further evidence of the clash: while the Valencian PP claims to have communicated their decision to Feijóo's leadership, the national headquarters in Madrid denies it. The Valencian PP's general secretary, Juanfran Pérez Llorca, would emerge as the consensus solution. In any case, what Feijóo was clear about, according to those close to him, is that Carlos Mazón would not run again in the next regional elections. When did he intend to communicate this to the Valencian leader? The PP leadership doesn't specify, nor do they explain when Feijóo made his decision. Was it before or after the funeral? A detail that is not insignificant and that the management also fails to specify.

Mazón's capacity

Mazón will continue as a member of the Valencian Parliament. A decision that Feijóo respects, according to sources within the party leadership. "It's a personal decision. He hasn't been charged with anything," they add. However, one theory circulating is that the judge in Catarroja presiding over the case hasn't formally charged the Valencian president because she would lose control of the case, as it would then fall under the jurisdiction of the Valencian High Court due to his parliamentary immunity. While Mazón clings to his seat in the Valencian Parliament, he has offered his resignation as president of the Valencian PP to the party, according to the same sources. This is a can of worms that the national leadership doesn't want to open for the time being until Mazón's successor as head of the Valencian Generalitat is secured. However, if Vox sabotages any agreement with the PP, the party will be forced to set its electoral machinery in motion against the clock. They don't rule out that scenario either, but they warn: "We understand that Vox won't complicate the investiture. In the midst of reconstruction, can we afford four months of campaigning?"
