A Junts councilor chooses the swastika over the espadrille

Barcelona"The espadrille or the swastika. You choose." This question was posed in an article just this week by the former president of the Generalitat and leader of Junts, Carles Puigdemont, after in the Parliament chamber Junts, ERC, CUP and Comuns displayed the famous poster "Let's crush fascism", created in 1936 by the photographer and publicist Pere Català i Pic. Well, there is at least one Junts councilor who chooses the swastika. It is Roger Pinart, second deputy mayor of El Port de la Selva, who has published a clear message on social media. "In this case, swastika", he wrote on X, responding to the unequivocally anti-fascist post by Junts: "Against hate, now and always. With President Companys, now and always".

The Junts publication was a message that pointed directly to Aliança Catalana, which a day earlier had supported Vox, attempting to prevent it from being sanctioned for having labeled Lluís Companys an "assassin". The leader of Aliança, Sílvia Orriols, attributed it all to an "error" by her spokesperson, Rosa Maria Soberana, even though it was not the first time that her party had appealed to freedom of expression to reject sanctions on deputies, including those of Vox.

Pinart is a councilor integrated into the Junts group in El Port de la Selva and occupied number 5 on the list in the 2023 elections. According to the party, however, he is an independent, even though he remains within the municipal government (the Junts members govern with an absolute majority). He is the son of the municipality's historic mayor Genís Pinart and brother of the current regional president of Aliança Catalana in Alt Empordà, who is also named Genís.

Far from reconsidering his position, Pinart has been responding to everyone who criticized his message with another poster, likely generated with artificial intelligence. One where an image of Pedro Sánchez can be seen lying on the ground and covered with what is deduced to be meant to look like a senyera (even though it only has three red stripes) and a message: "Communism or Catalonia. You choose".
