Former Socialist minister Juan Manuel Eguiagaray dies
The Bilbao native was one of the negotiators for Felipe González's government with ETA in the late 1980s.

Former Socialist minister Juan Manuel Eguiagaray died this Thursday at the age of 79. Born in Bilbao in 1945, he had a long career in Spanish politics after serving as one of the negotiators for Felipe González's government in the talks with ETA in Algiers in the late 1980s. In the early 1990s, Eguiagaray served as the Spanish government's delegate in the Basque Country and later served as Minister of Industry and Energy, as well as Minister of Public Administration.
The secretary general of the PSE-EE, Eneko Andueza, announced the death of Juan Manuel Eguiagaray in the plenary session of the Basque Parliament. He described the former minister as a "statesman" and one of the architects of a pluralistic Spain.
Juan Manuel Eguiagaray held a PhD in Law, a degree in Economics from the University of Deusto (Bilbao), a diploma in higher education from the University of Nancy (France), and was a professor of economic structure and policy at the Faculty of Economics at the University of Deusto.
