The candidate for investiture, Pere Aragonès, entering Parliament this Friday

Barcelona"New stage" and "republican" Generalitat were two of the expressions that the new president of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, used the most in his investiture speech last Thursday. That is why he will also try to see them reflected in the act of taking office, which will take place this Monday at 8.15 pm at the Palau de la Generalitat. The main stage will be the Pati dels Tarongers, one of the best known spaces of the headquarters of the Government. According to government sources consulted by ARA, the act will have several symbolisms, such as allusions to the Republican Generalitat of 1931. That Generalitat was headed first by Francesc Macià and then by Lluís Companys, and has always been a period widely claimed by ERC.

Republicans have traditionally viewed that period with a certain nostalgia for the hegemony that the party achieved until the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. Ninety years later, they are still far from recovering that hegemony because the political landscape is now very fragmented, but at least for the first time since then they have managed to regain the helm of the Government. However, if Aragonès has used a slogan for his next government, it is to ensure that it will once again be a "republican" Generalitat. How? That is what he will have to define as of tomorrow.

This Monday's event will also seek to have a certain generational character. It will also include allusions to the fight against the pandemic, with messages about the present and the future of the country. At the same time, it will have the traditional elements of such an act. The decree of appointment will be read, the medal will be awarded, he will make his first speech and the national anthem of Catalonia will be sung - the music will be provided by Magalí Sare and Manel Fortià. It will last about 35 minutes.

Guests

The guest list will not be the same as on previous occasions. The pandemic makes it necessary. Apart from the president's closest family members, the president of ERC, Oriol Junqueras, the president of the Parliament, Laura Borràs, and the former president of the Generalitat, Quim Torra, are expected to attend. Under normal conditions, there would be a natural handover between Aragonès and Torra, but the latter was disqualified on 28 September over the issue of the prisoners' banner, which is why the government has been without a president for more than seven months.

There will also be representatives of the Spanish government. As reported by the Delegation of the Spanish government in Catalonia, will be the delegate, Teresa Cunillera, and the Minister of Territorial Policy and Public Function, Miquel Iceta. In fact, one of the main folders of Pere Aragonès will be to reactivate the table of dialogue between the Catalan and Spanish governments. Both show signs of wanting to meet, but do not agree on what to discuss. After the inauguration, the next step will be to know definitively the members of the new Government. Some unknowns have been resolved, but questions remain as to who will occupy some of the fifteen seats on the executive board.
