Actress Selma Blair has been detained following a violent incident during a flight traveling from Los Angeles to New York. According to TMZ, the actress from Legally Blonde –where she played Vivian Kensington, the rival of the protagonist played by Reese Witherspoon– allegedly assaulted a flight attendant and bit one of the passengers after attempting to open the door of the Delta Air Lines plane while in flight.
The police, who were waiting for her at the boarding gate, arrested Blair when the plane landed in New York. The 54-year-old actress ended up arrested and taken to a hospital for examination. Two flight attendants suffered injuries and one required hospital care, according to media outlets TMZ and Variety.
A representative for Blair stated that the artist "suffered a medical emergency that resulted in the mentioned behavior" and that after landing "she received medical attention and is currently stable." Variety reports that the Port Authority was the one to confirm Blair's identity and that the FBI is investigating the incident, which occurred this Sunday.
In a statement, Delta Air Lines affirms that it "has zero tolerance for disruptive or illegal behavior, as the safety of its customers and crew is always the priority." Despite the chaos on board, the flight did not suffer operational disruptions and landed at John F. Kennedy Airport around 11 p.m. local time.
It is not the first time the actress has been involved in an incident of this type on a plane: in 2016 she was evacuated on a stretcher from a flight while traveling with her four-year-old son, after suffering a "total psychotic breakdown," explains Variety. Blair attributed the incident to the combination of a glass of wine and a pill: "It was horrible and terrifying. In fact, afterwards I felt empathy for myself, because it was conduct totally alien to my way of being, especially considering that I am a mother," she said on that occasion.
