BarcelonaThe actress and comedian Sílvia Abril has become a target of the far-right after making statements in which she criticized the Catholic Church. During her appearance on the red carpet at the Goya Awards, held this Saturday in Barcelona, Abril was interviewed by the magazine Cinemanía, which asked her about her favorite film of this edition of the awards. The actress opted for Sorda, but also spoke aboutLos domingos, the drama about a teenager who wants to become a cloistered nun. "I feel sorry that young people need to believe in something and cling to the Christian faith. I'm sorry for the Church, but what a kiosk you have set up. It's over, get out," said Abril, who argued that she preferred Sorda because she found it more "necessary" than Alauda Ruiz de Azúa's film.

The opinion of the Catalan actress has not been well received by various ultra-Catholic groups, who have attacked her through social media. Through X and Instagram, the group Universitarios Católicos has responded to Abril, echoing the discourse that cinema and the audiovisual sector are sustained mainly thanks to subsidies. "Madam, the Spanish cinema's kiosk, which lives on 250 million euros of public subsidies, is a real kiosk. Wash your mouth before you talk about the Catholic Church," they say in a publication in response to the video from Cinemanía. After this first publication, they made a second one in which they state that they "pray" for the actress.

The far-right association Hazte Oír has also joined the criticism. The day after the Goya Awards, they published a message ridiculing Abril's words. "Good Sunday to all, except to Sílvia Abril, who seems to be bothered that young people are getting closer to the Lord every day. Yesterday, hundreds of us demonstrated it by walking through the streets of Madrid with the Rosary for youth. If it itches, scratch it," the message reads.

Although it was not Sílvia Abril's favorite film, Los domingos was the big winner of the Goya night and took home five awards – best film, director, actress (Patricia López Arnaiz), supporting actress, and original screenplay.
