Brad Pitt reveals he had suicidal thoughts: "The pain was so oppressive I didn't see a way out"
The actor explains to 'Esquire' that he has had suicidal thoughts due to "family problems" and confesses that he is no longer abstinent
BarcelonaBrad Pitt has spoken openly about the darkest stage of his life, when "family matters" first led him to have suicidal thoughts and made him an abstainer. The 62-year-old actor made these statements to "Esquire", mainly aimed at a male audience. During an in-depth interview, Pitt talks about some of the most difficult moments of his career. "I was never suicidal, but there was a time when the pain was so oppressive that I saw no way out. I wasn't going to do it, but I could feel the bullet going through my brain and it seemed like a relief," confesses the actor. Pitt points out that "we all have incredible survival instincts" and that he feels fortunate because in his case this impulse was activated immediately.
Regarding his relationship with alcohol, the actor explains that 10 years ago he decided not to drink again and that, after seven years of abstinence, he suffered a small relapse. "I got complacent, but I immediately thought: 'This doesn't suit me, not in large quantities.' Now I can have a glass of wine, but not many. I have to do it professionally," he assures.
His ex-wife, actress Angelina Jolie, accused him during the divorce of assaulting her and their children, acts she attributed to the actor's problems with alcohol. In the interview with "Esquire", Pitt admits that "family matters are not easy shit." The actor's statements come just days after "his daughter Vivienne Jolie renounced Pitt's surname. Vivienne's decision is added to that of her siblings: Shiloh, 20; Zahara, 21, and Maddox, 24, all in the legal process of changing their surname. "Pitt and Jolie officially separated at the end of 2024.
Pitt assures "Esquire" that he would like to be fifty years old again: "If I could go back, I would do more things. Whatever you have in mind, do it." The actor also talks about his mother's death and how it profoundly affected him. "Grief is probably the emotion that makes us all equal – reflects Pitt –. The loneliness that comes after a loss is the greatest torture one can experience." The actor will premiere at the end of this year "En el corazón de la bestia", an action film directed by David Ayer in which a retired soldier and his dog must survive alone in the middle of Alaska.
