BarcelonaThe styling of Amaia Montero, the lead singer of La Oreja de Van Gogh, has stirred up controversy since the start of the Basque band's comeback tour. In fact, even before that, with the outfit she chose to perform on New Year's Eve. Her vocal abilities have also been called into question since the first day, due to the obvious problems she had with staying in tune and performing her own songs from start to finish, on a tour that celebrates the group's thirtieth anniversary.
Following her performance in Zaragoza for the Festes del Pilar –a double concert with sold-out tickets–, some videos have gone viral again on social media criticizing a stage performance plagued by technical issues, ridiculing her and criticizing both her voice and her look, a black dress with wide sleeves and a bow on the back. Social media has been filled with negative and harmful comments, even comparing her current appearance at 50 years old to that of her 20s. However, other specialists and fans have also defended her, highlighting that she is punished more for her body than for poor taste in dressing. "They blame the wardrobe when what makes them uncomfortable is her body, which has changed over time," says stylist Marta Pontnou in a video.
In fact, following the viralized videos, the singer is trending topic. This Tuesday, Amaia Montero responded with irony, through her official Instagram, with some verses from the song 19 días y 500 noches, by Joaquín Sabina: "She always had her head held high, a very long tongue, and a very short skirt".
