If a good doctor attacks the causes of the disease and not just the symptoms, a good politician should study the roots of a conflict and not limit himself to repressing it and then granting the right to a fair trial. funny of forgiveness. This politician does not exist in Spain, or he is in ostracism, and therefore the case of the Catalans, as it was called in the 18th century, is still very much in force despite the fact that the PSOE proclaims that the conflict known as the Process It can be considered closed. The process will not remain closed until the amnesty has been extended to everyone. But what is certain is that the conflict remains, and those of us who believe in it have work to do.

The first task is to forget 2017 and take stock of strengths and weaknesses. The next step is to seek and cultivate a generation of political and citizen leaders to replace those who are no longer here or who are no longer useful to us. And here I'm not just talking about leadership, but about forming a political class that's less mediocre than the current one, with a new perspective. This new generation will also need things to say, and therefore will need the support of all the new voices that, with a less tainted view of our recent past, can chart new strategies and horizons. To put it lightly, Catalan nationalism needs to hold a mass meeting. casting national.

The second duty is to strengthen Catalan identity. This may sound supremacist, but only to true supremacists. It may also seem like an amendment to the "broadening the base" strategy, so often criticized for its notorious failure (in which I feel a firm part). But no: strengthening is rather a necessary preliminary step to broadening. The national community must be strengthened for the good of the country—because without a strong core, connected to culture, territory, and common heritage, Catalonia will be nothing more than a new thematic area of Port Aventura—but also because with strength and excellence we will be better able to interact with the rest of the country, with all its expressions; or to compare them, if they are hostile.

This demands activism and activism, without a doubt, but above all, systematic work to strengthen and consolidate the Catalan reality. I give as an example what Accent Obert (formerly Fundació puntCAT) is doing to promote Catalan creation in the digital sphere. If we could replicate what these people are doing in schools, audiovisual media, business, the union world, the peasantry, the arts and culture, and social movements, we would achieve what is currently at risk: ensuring that no one can live with their backs to the beating heart of the country. Which, by the way, doesn't just involve language, but also building, together, a collective dream. If we do things this way, politics will follow suit.

And someone will say: we already tried and failed. And it's true. Therefore, we have to do it differently and better. Whoever does it will have to be smarter, bolder when appropriate, and more cunning. They will have to know when and where a million people are needed, and when and where 300, or 3,000, are needed. They will have to know how to work and stir up a hornet's nest at the same time. They will have to make the most of autonomy (for example, by building their own treasury) and use the adversary (for example, with amnesty), taking advantage of their problems, which, as we've seen lately, are notorious. And they will also have to be aware that, in the current political moment, this is not the time for false epics or games of Chicken Run..

Do you think he's heard this song before? Maybe, like me, his time has passed. But it's a fact that every generation seeks its own soundtrack. And I'm sure the jingle playing today from the Palau de la Generalitat could hardly compete with a "drum riot" like the one Manel sang.
