In eight years, breast implant removal surgeries have doubled in Spain. The reasons for this increase are related to the expiration of implants and fashion. If they are not removed after 10 or 15 years, they can cause serious health problems, and what was once fashionable is no longer fashionable. The feminine image has changed, shifting from "voluptuous breasts to naturalness," according to Jaume Masià, director of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Service at Sant Pau Hospital. Many of the women who had them implanted twenty years ago have found they need to be replaced, and now, at 45, they don't like the idea of undergoing surgery again in their 60s or 65s to undergo another change. I'm talking about purely aesthetics, not the breast reconstructions performed for breast cancer. Obviously, these have nothing to do with fashion. And I talk about how fashion forces us to modify our bodies.

Another aesthetic fact. Tattoos. A fashion that has gone from being marginal many years ago to being, currently, predominant. What can practically be considered marginal now is not having any tattoos on your body. I can't argue about tastes, but when there are tattoos, what need do you have to marry a bad idea forever? According to a study, 60% of people who get a tattoo regret it within five years. The trend of getting tattoos, which has increased exponentially, is also experiencing the opposite effect; it's increasing the number of people who want to get rid of them. Their own, of course. Not other people's. Although if they let me... I'll keep quiet. In any case, the reasons for getting rid of tattoos range from changing your mind to changing partners or jobs. And the way to do it isn't easy. That's why I insist on tattoos, because with a little water, the bad moment will be over. With tattoos, you need money, time, and a healthy pain threshold.

Joking aside, being who we are, it's normal that we also have the need to try things. And tattoos have been done all over the world throughout history. The reasons and methods have changed, of course. And before, people who got them never got them removed. Women's breasts, on the other hand, were neither removed nor replaced. This is a much more recent phenomenon that has to do with aesthetics but also with social pressure, self-esteem, sexism, and purchasing power. Years ago, a British mother obsessed with cosmetic surgery gave her seven-year-old daughter a voucher for a boob job and liposuction, which, legally, could only be done after the age of 16. Today, there are parents who give their daughters a boob job when they turn 18. For aesthetic reasons only. For medical reasons, there would be no debate. But this debate is eternal and the little we can do is decide what we do with our bodies and not judge what others do with theirs. The conclusion, in any case, is that all prosthesisThey also deteriorate over time. But aging doesn't mean you have to replace them, just accept them. It's no small feat.

We have many problems with our bodies. Despite the amount of talk about so many topics that until now were taboo, there's a lot of nonsense and little existential depth. Furthermore, unhelpful models still prevail. Even when they want to incorporate non-normative bodies or bodies of diverse ages, they place people within the standard beauty model, but with more weight or older age. That's not reality. But the reality is that we don't want to be real either.
