A place that was not his own

Farewell to Christopher Person as the Generalitat's delegate in PerpignanThe government says he resigned "at his own request." It doesn't matter; his continued tenure was untenable, and the government, which knew this, must have made it clear to him.

The one who expressed it best was the mayor of Elna, Nicolas Garcia, who declared on Catalunya Ràdio that "there will be no possible reconciliation between the militant Catalanists in Northern Catalonia and this young man, who may have been given a position that wasn't his" because perhaps "he didn't have the experience."

"This kid" is a fairly accurate description of the verbal and body language we saw him use in Parliament. He showed no desire to fill the role with institutional strength, a glacial distance from the deputies who reported to him, as if he hadn't yet understood why, for historical, linguistic, or political reasons, the Generalitat should have an office in Perpignan. He didn't even have any dialectical skills to defend his position, however indefensible it might be. It's clear he was given a position he wasn't meant for, which highlights the error of whoever appointed him. "A kid" can't be a representative of a government, even less so when he shows such little empathy for the idea he represents. Unless he had overinterpreted the government's probable order to keep quiet and not disturb the French government.

Political communication has become filled with this disdainful form of social media, which seeks to appear firm and irritate the adversary so they lose their temper. Fortunately, the new delegate, Albert Piñeira, is well-versed in public relations and knows his turf.
