While the world is heading towards catastrophe, as the poet Estellés warned, the Valencian PP, with Carlos Mazón at the head, continues to literally crawl through the mud. The judge of the investigating court number 3 of Catarroja, Núria Ruiz Tobarra, has decided to investigate the events of last October 29 and has already placed the Valencian government in a situation that may become judicially compromised, having stated, in two documents, that the deaths caused by the DANA could have been avoided. "When these warnings finally arrived it was too late and they also contained erroneous information. For the moment, the judge wants to know in detail which authorities joined the Cecopio between five and eight eleven in the afternoon. We must wish her luck, because at the moment it has not been possible to even see the invoice for Carlos Mazón's famous lunch that day: the only document that has been made public has been the hours in which his official car was in operation, with the detail that the driver ate at some point during the day.
Following this childish and botched line of avoiding responsibility, Mazón and his entourage went so far as to spread a manipulated audio a few days ago, with a conversation between an Aemet worker and another from 112, conveniently cut to make it seem like they were saying what they had not said. It was a desperate manoeuvre that fits within one of the lines of defence of the Valencian government of the PP and Vox: to blame public officials and workers for the actions (or rather, the lack of actions) of the rulers. For the same price, Mazón has also fired at the firefighters, Aemet itself, the Júcar Hydrographic Confederation, etc.
Politically, for the moment, she has succeeded, with the support of Vox, which this Thursday in the Corts Valencianes has once again demonstrated that its break with the PP was only a more or less tactical staging. However, in practice, the two parties of the Spanish ultra-nationalist right know that they need each other, and despite all the resentments and suspicions that separate them, they do not forget to join forces whenever necessary. Mazón, therefore, will remain in power, and it is evident that she aspires not only to remain in power, but to complete the legislature and present herself for re-election having carried out the delicious work of distributing contracts in the reconstruction tasks.
However, the judicial investigations and the indignation of the victims (which, contrary to what the PP had expected, does not subside with time) could turn his mandate into a long period of political agony. Especially if Mazón himself – following the Trumpist style of Ayuso in Madrid – dedicates himself to feeding that indignation by despising the victims and confronting them. In the end, we are not just talking about lying and corrupt rulers and disastrous management resulting in 227 deaths that could have been avoided. We are also talking about a pure question of human quality.
