The organizers of the Tokyo Olympics decided on Thursday to hold the Olympics without spectators in the stands due to a spike in the number of infections in the capital. The announcement comes after backtracking on the measure announced two weeks ago to have up to 10,000 spectators in the facilities.

Japan's Minister in charge of the Games, Tamayo Marukawa, announced the unprecedented restriction after a meeting on Thursday between the organisers and representatives of the international Olympic and Paralympic Committees.

The decision to ban the presence of spectators in Tokyo has been taken shortly after the Prime Minister of the country, Yoshihide Suga, declaring a new coronavirus health emergency in the capital, which will coincide with the celebration of the Olympics.
